Jackson Leonard Bostwick, Jr. (born October 23, 1943) is an American actor who is best known for having acted out the role of Captain Marvel in the first season of the Shazam! television series in 1974-75.

Bostwick was dismissed from the cast of Shazam! two installments into the second season and replaced in the role by actor John Davey. Bostwick had not shown up for a day's shooting, and the producers, Louis Scheimer and Norman Prescott, accused him of holding out for a higher salary. Bostwick explained that he had sustained an injury during the previous day's filming and had gone to seek medical treatment. He successfully litigated against Filmation Associates, which was forced to pay him for the remainder of his contract, plus residuals, including the entire second season.

Bostwick was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Bostwick's father, Dr. Jackson Leonard Bostwick Sr. M.D., was a well-known neurosurgeon who was licensed, was based, and practiced in Montgomery, Alabama. In the late 1980s, Bostwick's father suddenly died. Bostwick had briefly returned to Montgomery before this and had taught theater at Auburn University at Montgomery, where he directed several plays, including The Ballad of the Sad Cafe. He also became the founder of the L.A. (Lower Alabama) Film Group and the MIT [Made (mostly) In Tennessee] Film Group, two independent "off-Hollywood" motion-picture and television production companies.

Bostwick met his wife, Elizabeth, in Los Angeles, where she was working as an actress. He is trained in jeet kune do and Wing-Chun Kung-Fu.

The Lamp’s introductory scenes suggest the film is a tall tale steeped in mythology and exaggerated mayhem that parody slasher films of the 1990s. The picture opens on board a cargo ship sailing from the Middle East (Damascus) bound for the old shipping seaport of Galveston, Texas. On deck, dead sailors litter the planks. One crate that appears to have been ripped open from the inside indicates that it was bound for a Houston museum.

The film begins with a couple Frank (Ted Hayden) and Mary Sylvester (Connie Hunter) cooking food over a campfire while being watched by a mysterious figure in the shadows (played by Carel Struycken, but not seen until the end of the film). While Mary is taking a walk in the woods, she hears her husband scream and returns to the campsite to find her husband's decapitated corpse. She is then killed by the killer wielding her husband's axe. As they progress deeper into the wilderness, it becomes clear that the killer from the beginning of the film is stalking them. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is a software engineer, formerly employed by the computer corporation ENCOM, who now runs an arcade bar called Flynn's. He wrote several video games, but another ENCOM engineer, Ed Dillinger (David Warner), stole them and passed them off as his own, earning himself a series of promotions until reaching Senior Executive VP. Having left the company, Flynn attempts to obtain evidence of Dillinger's actions by hacking the ENCOM mainframe, but is repeatedly stopped by the Master Control Program (MCP), an artificial intelligence written by Dillinger. However, since its inception the MCP has become power-hungry, illegally appropriating business and even government programs and absorbing them to increase its own capacities; it informs Dillinger of its plans to subjugate The Pentagon and the Kremlin, and expresses interest in China with its request for Chinese-translation programs, blackmailing Dillinger into compliance with records of his theft of the games.

Max Devlin (Elliott Gould) is a shady landlord of a rundown tenement in Los Angeles who is rather jaded and callous towards his fellow man. One day while chasing an errant tenant, he is run over by a bus and killed. He descends into hell (which resembles a corporate business) and meets the Devil's chief henchman Barney Satin (read: Satan) (Bill Cosby). He is told of his life of sin and the fact that he is doomed to spend eternity at a section called Level 4. However, he is given a chance to save himself by convincing three other people to sell their souls in exchange for his. Max returns to Earth and begins his frantic quest with two months (ending on May 15) to complete his mission. Barney appears frequently throughout the movie to check up on Max's progress as well as both taunt and persuade him to carry out the plans. A running joke is that nobody, except Max, can see or hear Barney.

An unidentified flying object makes an emergency landing on Earth and is taken into custody by the United States government. The occupant of the "flying saucer" turns out to be a strange cat-like alien named Zunar-J-5/9 Doric-4-7. Since the Mother Ship cannot send a rescue party before it leaves the solar system, the cat sets about investigating how to repair the ship himself. Using a special collar that amplifies telekinetic and telepathic abilities, he follows the military to the Energy Research Laboratory (or E.R.L.), where they hope to learn how the UFO's power source works. One of the lab's scientists, Dr. Frank Wilson, attracts the cat's attention when his theory on the power source, while ridiculed by the rest of the staff, is actually on the right track.
