Janet MacLachlan (August 27, 1933 – October 11, 2010) was an American character actress who had roles in such television series as The Rockford Files, Alias and The Golden Girls. She is best remembered for her key supporting part in the film Sounder (1972). MacLachlan worked with numerous well known black actors and actresses and celebrities such as Bill Cosby, Jim Brown, James Earl Jones and Maya Angelou.

Biography

Janet MacLachlan entame sa carrière d'actrice au théâtre et joue notamment Off-Broadway en juillet 1962, puis à Broadway en décembre 1962 et janvier 1963, dans la pièce Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright de Peter Feibleman , mise en scène par Joshua Logan, aux côtés (entre autres) de Claudia McNeil et Roscoe Lee Browne.

Au cinéma, elle contribue à seulement vingt-et-un films américains, le premier étant Point noir de Jules Dassin (avec Raymond St. Jacques et Ruby Dee), sorti en 1968. Le dernier est Passé virtuel de Josef Rusnak (coproduction germano-américaine, avec Craig Bierko et Armin Mueller-Stahl), sorti en 1999. Mentionnons également Colère noire de Paul Bogart (1970, avec Calvin Lockhart et Jeff Bridges) et La Corde raide de Richard Tuggle (1984, avec Clint Eastwood et Geneviève Bujold).

Janet MacLachlan est surtout active à la télévision, où elle apparaît dans soixante-quatorze séries, depuis Suspicion en 1965 (deux épisodes) jusqu'à Alias en 2002 (un épisode). Despite the evidence presented by the district attorney (Larry Cedar), Jennifer Garrick (Rosalind Allen), the lawyer defending Vincent Gotto (Lewis Van Bergen), an accused child murderer on death row, believes her client is not guilty, and is hiding the identity of the real killer. In 1961 the freshman class of Westwood High School in Los Angeles is profiled in Look magazine. In the article they are called the future of the country. Howard Rollins stars as assassinated civil rights activist Medgar Evers, while Irene Cara co-stars as his wife (and future NAACP chairperson) Myrlie. The film concentrates on Evers, an ex-insurance agent turned activist, in the final years of his life as the first NAACP field secretary in Mississippi. In 1954, he is involved in a boycott against white merchants and was instrumental in eventually desegragating the University of Mississippi in 1962. His home in Jackson, Mississippi is besieged by bigots and he and his family are threatened with dire consequences, but Evers continues to work towards the goal of integrating his racially-polarized state. On June 12, 1963, however, the 37-year-old Evers is shot to death in front of his home by white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith.
