The film opens with a soldier and nurse getting out of two 1940-style cars in the middle of night. The nurse runs up to the soldier and the camera switches to reveal this to be a scene from a film. The three Piggly Wiggly store workers—Rosalee, Cathy, and Pete—are watching and as the nurse on screen asks for forgiveness and the soldier agrees, the women in the audience are moved to tears as Pete is clearly unimpressed. As the girls wonder what Tad Hamilton—the star of the film—is doing at that moment, their prediction of praying is proven false as the scene cuts to Tad—described in the next scene by his agent—"drinking, driving, smoking, leering, and groping all at the same time".

Dancing In September tells the story of two hopeful and ambitious African-Americans attempting to make their mark in the television industry. One is a scriptwriter named Tomasina “Tommy” Crawford (Parker), who has grown weary of contributing to stereotypical characters and programming for African-Americans and dreams of creating a balanced, positive program for herself and the African-American public. The other is a newly appointed television producer named George Washington (Washington), who hopes to ascend to the highest levels of the television industry and carve out a special place for himself to help redefine African-American programming. When Tommy submits a script for a positive family sitcom titled "Just Us," she is indirectly brought into George's path. The rest of the film follows the struggles that both she and George face in their specific environments, mainly painting a positive portrayal of African-Americans in the media, in addition to staying true to their own culture and identity as African-Americans.

Young, ambitious businessman Jeffrey Byron and his sexually frustrated wife Marianne, and older repair contractor "Lucky" Mann and his former B-movie actress wife Phyllis, are unhappily married and living in Montreal, Canada. After 15 years of marriage, Phyllis tells her husband that he is not the father of their daughter and that she conceived the child via relations with attractive co-actor Jack when he was away on Navy duty. Lucky is deeply shocked by this, leaving the house to reflect upon their relationship, ultimately going to the bar and drinking in excess. After coming home, Lucky rails at his wife for being unfaithful, and throws household items at her. Upon hearing his tirade, their teenage daughter Daisy leaves the house the very same night. Her absence intensifies their negative relations and Lucky and Phyllis decide to stay together on certain terms, namely sleeping in different rooms and not with one another or others. They receive a letter from Daisy in which she writes that they are not fit to be her parents and she never wants to see them again. Consequently, Lucky and Phyllis sell their house and travel to Montreal, Canada, where the letter was post-marked in order to find her (though the viewer only comes to know this later in the film).
