Joey Newman (born September 9, 1976) is a Los Angeles-based film composer, orchestrator, arranger and conductor working in the fields of film and television. Joey was educated at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.

Biography

Joey Newman is a third generation film composer born into a diverse, musical family. His father, Joe Frank Carollo (a Mississippi-born rock/R&B bass player who played with the T-Bones in the 1960s and the pop group Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds in the 1970s) and his mother, Jenifer Newman (a classically trained ballerina who danced with the New York City Ballet and the Boston Repertory Ballet) nurtured his musical beginnings. Further inspiration and guidance came from his grandfather, Lionel Newman (the Oscar-winning composer/conductor who headed 20th Century Fox’s Music Department for 47 years after his older brother and nine-time Oscar winner, Alfred Newman, retired) and his composer uncles, Randy Newman, David Newman and Thomas Newman. His cousin Maria Newman (Alfred's youngest daughter) is a well known composer of music for the concert stage.

Joey was drumming at the age of three, owning his first set of drums at the age of eight. At nine, he was chosen for the boy’s chorus of The Los Angeles Master Chorale where he performed with The Deutsche Oper Berlin Company's production of Tosca and Die Tote Stadt, featuring Plácido Domingo. That same year, he performed in the boy’s chorus of La Boheme at UCLA’s Royce Hall. At the age of 11, he studied piano under the tutelage of Herb Donaldson. He began his serious approach to drumming under the instruction of veteran drummer, Michael Barsimanto (Mark Isham, Jean Luc Ponty, Ivan Neville, Billy Preston). Joey began composition studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, earning his Bachelor of Music degree. He returned to his hometown of Los Angeles where he began his career working in television with Emmy®-winning composer W.G. “Snuffy” Walden, co-composing the final seasons of Once and Again, starring Sela Ward, and Providence, starring Melina Kanakaredes. Joey also provided orchestrations for Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing as well as a number of other primetime dramas and sitcoms.

On his own, Joey has composed the music to features, network/cable television series, and video games. As a conductor and orchestrator, Joey has worked across the media spectrum including conducting alongside Michael Tilson Thomas and John Williams. From 2001-2006, Joey composed the orchestral score to NCsoft’s Lineage, one of the biggest online role-playing games in history. In 2003, Joey began a fruitful collaboration with his cousin Randy, providing orchestrations for Universal’s Seabiscuit and later Disney/Pixar's Cars. He also conducted the music to the Disney California Adventure Park ride Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! which his cousin, Randy, originally scored. For six seasons, Joey composed the score to the everyday life of the Roloff family in TLC's hit docu-series, Little People, Big World, including the Grand Canyon episode in season 3 which earned him a 2008 Emmy nomination. Currently in its fourth season, Joey's music can be heard on the ABC comedy The Middle starring Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn. For the award-winning feature Any Day Now, Joey composed the score and provided a string arrangement for Rufus Wainwright's original song "Metaphorical Blanket".

At her Marie Antoinette-themed birthday bash, Michelle loses her head after a few drinks and wakes up dishevelled in a hotel room. Forty days later, she discovers she’s pregnant and sets about finding the culprit. Michelle narrows it down to three suspects who turned up at her shindig: figure-skating teenager Jeb (Jiang Jingfu); seafood-sauce tycoon Tiger (Leon Lai, vulgarly dismantling his matinee-idol image); and her Harvard-educated Chinese-American boss, Bill (Korean-American thesp Daniel Henney). Their confrontations provide ample opportunities for overdone slapstick and naughty sexual innuendo, but there’s also the matter of her incompatibility with any of them, poignantly addressing the harsh reality that she’s not exactly long-term relationship material in their eyes.

Rudy Donatello (Alan Cumming) is a struggling musician and drag performer in a gay nightclub in 1979 West Hollywood, where he meets Paul Fleiger (Garret Dillahunt) , a closeted district attorney. Returning home to his apartment, Rudy finds Marco (Isaac Leyva), a 14-year-old with Down syndrome, left alone after his mother, Marianna (Jamie Ann Allman), had been arrested. Rudy takes in the abandoned boy, but Family Services intervenes and takes Marco to foster care. Rudy enlists Paul to help him gain custody of Marco; and the two visit Marianna in prison to coax her into signing the temporary guardianship papers, which she does. All is well as Rudy and Paul become Marco's guardians; but, when Rudy and Paul's relationship is called into question by the court system, the two men find themselves spiraling into a legal battle to become the legal and permanent guardians of the fascinating boy who showed them both the real joy of what it means to be a parent. After having their home (Marco's living environment) evaluated, the men are put in front of a judge (Frances Fisher) who is to decide what's best for the child. The evaluation comes back positive, and it is decided that Rudy and Paul are great parents for Marco. However, just as the court is about to rule in favor of the men, Marco's mother is released from prison. She takes back custody of Marco, leaving Rudy and Paul without their son. Marco is heard saying as he is taken back to his mother's apartment, "this is not my home, this is not my home." As expected, Marianna returns to her old ways (using drugs, sleeping around, etc.) and fails to take care of Marco. One night as she is having sex, Marianna tells Marco to step outside of the apartment. Marco begins to wander the streets in search of Paul's house (his true home). However, Marco is unable to find the house and dies outside, alone. The movie ends with a letter/monologue from Paul. The letter, which contained Marco's obituary, was sent to all who doubted the couple as Marco's parents. The hope was for them to realize the mistake they made that ended in this boy's untimely death.

This is a retelling of Adam and Eve's story (as found in the first three chapters of the Book of Genesis) from Dog's point of view. Dog is shown in the Garden of Eden, exploring its environment and encountering various animals. Its doggy nature is revealed in various scenes from territory marking to barking at a passing mastodon to attempting to befriend a lemur. One day in the savanna, it encounters the newly created Adam who is also exploring Eden. Adam feeds Dog some grains, pets it and moves on. The next day, Adam is high up on a tree, interacting with a bird, when Dog sees him again. Adam tosses down a fruit to Dog and climbs down. He is surprised that Dog is fascinated by the branch (now stripped of fruit) he is holding. When he throws the branch away, Dog fetches it back. Dog is excited when Adam (who knows all animal languages) barks like it. They become friends and explore Eden together. One day, Dog sees Adam with a new creature, Eve with long red hair. Dog attempts to interest Adam in a game of fetch but Adam throws the stick extremely far away in order to get rid of Dog. When Dog returns with the stick, Adam and Eve are gone. Dog waits all day for him to return. At night, Dog (with stick) wanders Eden and sees a panther with a dead rabbit in its mouth. It starts to rain. Dog then sees Adam and Eve, wearing clothes, running through the forest. He chases after them, barking joyously but when Adam turns around, his face is so distorted and sinister, Dog runs away terrified. Other animals also flee them. Adam and Eve stop and stand facing away from each other. They look ashamed, dejected and alone. The next day, Adam and Eve emerge from Eden and enters a bleak desert. They are clothed in rough animal fur. Dog sees them leave, takes a step out of Eden, pauses and then returns to Eden. It then dashes out with the stick in its mouth and runs towards them. In the last scene, Dog lays the stick at a surprised Adam's feet. Adam kneels down and pets Dog and tells Eve who Dog is. Eve kneels down in front of Dog and hugs and kisses it. Adam and Eve walk off together. They are holding hands and so close they seem like one person. Dog walks right by their side.

The parallel city of Monstropolis is inhabited by monsters and powered by the screams of children in the human world. At the factory of Monsters, Inc., employees called "scarers" venture into children's bedrooms to scare them and collect their screams, using closet doors as portals. This is considered a dangerous task because the monsters believe children are toxic and that touching them would be fatal. However, production is falling as children are becoming harder to scare and the company's chairman Henry J. Waternoose III is determined to find a solution. The top scarer is James P. "Sulley" Sullivan, who lives with his friend and assistant Mike Wazowski and has a rivalry with the ever-determined chameleon-like monster Randall Boggs. During an ordinary day's work on what is known as the "Scarefloor", another scarer accidentally brings a child's sock into the factory, causing the Child Detection Agency (CDA) to arrive and cleanse him. Mike is frequently ridiculed by the company's clerk Roz for never completing his paperwork on time.

The four of them have to move out of their apartment and proceed to work book buy back day, an event at college that lets students buy and sell used textbooks. The movie shows them repeatedly stealing some of the books and then selling them back to the book buyer in a smooth and elegant manner, as though they have done this many times. They also visit their favorite bar, Rennie's Landing, one last time. Casey asks Sam at one point why nothing has ever happened between the two of them, but she brushes him off and just tells him "don't.
