Will Graham (William Petersen) is a former FBI criminal profiler who has retired because of a mental breakdown after being attacked by a cannibalistic serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox) whom he captured. Graham is approached at his Florida home by his former FBI superior Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina), who is seeking help with a new serial killer case. Promising his wife (Kim Greist) that he will do nothing more than examine evidence and not risk physical harm, Graham agrees to visit the most recent crime scene in Atlanta, where he tries to enter the mindset of the killer, now dubbed the "Tooth Fairy" by the police for the bite-marks left on his victims.

Spanning nearly 20 years from the early 1940s to the 1960s, the plot focuses on Susan Traherne, an Englishwoman who is irreparably changed by her experiences as a fighter for the French Resistance during World War II when she has a one-night stand with a British intelligence agent. A hiker finds a dead woman on the Yorkshire moors; the victim, who has been strangled, is identified as Alice Ruber. Shortly afterwards, Belgian detective Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov) examines a diamond belonging to millionaire industrialist Sir Horace Blatt (Colin Blakely), and declares it a fake. Assured that Sir Horace gave a real diamond to his mistress and she later returned the fake to him, Poirot accompanies Sir Horace to confront her at an exclusive island resort. The hotel is the former summer palace of the reigning King of Tyrania, now owned by Daphne Castle (Maggie Smith), who had received the palace "for services rendered".

Frollo, l'archidiacre de Notre Dame est tombé amoureux de la gitane Esméralda. Accusée de vol il lui accorde l'asile mais elle refuse ses avances et s'enfuit. Quasimodo le sonneur de cloches difforme et bossu la rattrape, Pierre Gringoire, un poète de rue tente de la faire échapper mais se fait assommer par Quasimodo. Ce dernier est finalement intercepté par les hommes de la garde royale commandé par Phoebus. Esmeralda tombe amoureuse de ce dernier. Pendant ce temps Pierre Gringoire est capturé par l'assemblé des voleurs et des vagabonds qui le condamne à la pendaison. Esméralda refuse ce jugement et le prend pour époux (pendant quatre ans) uniquement pour lui sauver la vie. Quasimodo est condamné à recevoir le fouet et à être exposé au pilori, Esméralda a pitié de lui et lui donne à boire. Frollo, apprenant qu'Esméralda a rendez-vous dans un hôtel borgne avec Phoebus se rend sur les lieux et poignarde le militaire. Esméralda est capturée, soupçonnée, torturée, jugée et condamnée à la pendaison. Quasimodo la sauve et la fait se réfugier dans l'église. Phoebus a survécu mais se refuse à intervenir pour casser la condamnation d'Esméralda qui repousse toujours les avances de Frollo. Ce dernier demande donc au parlement un édit annulant le droit d'asile de la jeune femme. Apprenant la nouvelle, Gringoire pousse l'assemblée des voleurs et des vagabonds à attaquer la cathédrale pour tenter de sauver la jeune femme. Quasimodo se méprenant sur les intentions des assaillants les empêche d'entrer en lançant de lourds projectiles.

Set in the 1920s in Pago Pago, Eastern Samoa, Charlotte, an American painter, arrives from Boston on the island of Alaya to visit her father, U. S. Navy Captain Bruckner, whom she hasn't seen in quite some time. Bruckner is the U.S. Congress-sanctioned Governor of the island, and he rules it with a stern, patrician, and thoroughly patronizing attitude towards the natives. Charlotte is somewhat taken aback by her father's rigid adherence to the law, particularly when she tries to intervene on behalf of Bruckner's charge/houseboy Matangi, who has involved Charlotte in a scheme to get Bruckner to toss out a harsh penalty issued to a native man who stole a boat "for love." Bruckner refuses, pish-poshing all this talk of love over the law, and severely reprimands Matangi, much to Charlotte's dismay.

The film begins with a meeting between wealthy heiress Linnet Ridgeway (Lois Chiles) and her close friend Jacqueline de Bellefort (Mia Farrow). The film begins with a tunnel collapse at the Sonderditch mine, in a scene that establishes the courage of Slater and his chief miner, 'Big King', and the bond of trust between them. This is contrasted with the contempt with which some other white managers treat the black miners. It is soon revealed that the collapse was no accident, but part of a plan by a London-based criminal syndicate, which includes the mine-owner's son-in-law Manfred Steyner, to destroy the mine so that the syndicate members can profit from share-dealing. This will be done by drilling through a deep underground wall or 'dyke' which is all that prevents an adjacent reservoir of water from flooding the mine.

Three MI6 agents, including one "on loan" to the American government, are killed under mysterious circumstances within 24 hours of each other in the United Nations, New Orleans and a small Caribbean island, San Monique, respectively, while monitoring the operations of Dr. Kananga, the island's dictator. James Bond, agent 007, is sent to New York City to investigate the first murder. Kananga is also in New York, visiting the United Nations. Just after Bond arrives, his driver is shot dead by Whisper, one of Kananga's men, while taking Bond to meet Felix Leiter of the CIA. Bond is nearly killed in the ensuing car crash.
