Jonas Mekas, né le 24 décembre 1922 dans le village de Semeniškiai, près de Biržai (Lituanie), et mort le 23 janvier 2019 à Brooklyn, New York (États-Unis), est un écrivain et réalisateur. Figure du cinéma underground, il est aussi critique et enseignant de cinéma. Il a popularisé le journal filmé.
En 1962, il cofonde The Film-Makers' Cooperative, première coopérative au monde de diffusion du cinéma indépendant et expérimental, ainsi nommée en hommage à Maya Deren.
En 1964, il joue son propre rôle dans Empire, un film expérimental de 8 heures d'Andy Warhol et filme au Living Theatre à New York la pièce de théâtre The Brig écrite par Kenneth Brown.
Il cofonde en 1970, avec Stan Brakhage, P. Adams Sitney et Peter Kubelka, l'Anthology Film Archives.

Biography
De 1944 à 1945, Jonas Mekas, après avoir quitté la Lituanie, est interné avec son frère Adolfas Mekas dans un camp de travail à Elmshorn près de Hambourg en Allemagne nazie. Les deux frères s'évadent et se cachent dans une ferme près de la frontière danoise. Après la guerre il vit dans des camps de personnes déplacées à Wiesbaden et Cassel. Entre 1946 et 1948 il étudie la philosophie à l'Université de Mayence. Le 29 octobre 1949, il arrive aux États-Unis où il a choisi de s'exiler.En 1962, il cofonde The Film-Makers' Cooperative, première coopérative au monde de diffusion du cinéma indépendant et expérimental, ainsi nommée en hommage à Maya Deren.

The program consists mostly of "film promos" around the song selection, interspersed with occasional slices of Lennon and Ono's life together, and also fantasy and "gag" sequences. In one of these, a succession of men (ranging from Lennon and Ono's assistants to celebrities including Fred Astaire, Jack Palance, Dick Cavett, and even George Harrison) escort Ono over and over through a doorway; in another, John and Yoko lose each other on the Tittenhurst grounds, and go looking.

The film begins with a totally white screen and as the sun sets, the image of the Empire State Building emerges. The floodlights on its exterior come on, the building's lights flicker on and off for the next 6½ hours, then the floodlights go off again in the next to the last reel so that the remainder of the film takes place in nearly total darkness. The movie was filmed with Andy Warhol directing and filmmaker Jonas Mekas working as cinematographer. During three of the reel changes, filming recommenced before the lights in the filming room were switched off, making the faces of Warhol and Mekas momentarily visible in the reflection of the window each time.
