He starred as real-life surfer Jay Moriarity in the 2012 film Chasing Mavericks and as brainy high school student David Raskin in the 2015 time-travel adventure Project Almanac. He has also appeared in Sugar, John Dies at the End, About Cherry and Caroline and Jackie.

Le policier Mark Corley est avec son fils Trent dans le métro et assiste à l'invasion de Los Angeles par des extra-terrestres. Audrey, la conductrice de métro reçoit un message l'avertissant de ne pas regarder une lumière bleue. Or Trent, ignorant ce message l'a vu et est hypnotisé. C'est l'intervention de son père qui l'a retenu de toutes ses forces, l'empêchant ainsi d'être aspiré contrairement aux autres personnes qui ont regardées cette lumière. Mark aide ensuite un petit groupe de survivants à quitter la ville envahie par les extra-terrestres mais au cours de leur périple ils sont capturés et enfermés à bord d'un vaisseau spatial alien. Séparé du groupe de survivants, Mark rencontre un extra-terrestre différent des autres, celui-ci se bat du côté des humains qui est en fait Jarrod du film précédent. Mark rencontre ensuite Elaine, la femme de Jarrod, enceinte et sur le point d'accoucher, il l'aide à faire naître leur enfant qui s'avère être une petite fille qui grandit très vite et se révèle avoir des dons. Mark retrouve ensuite son fils qui se fait décerveler par des tentacules hostiles afin de devenir un soldat extra-terrestre, la conductrice de métro et l'aveugle noir et ensemble ils se battent tous contre le chef des aliens. Au cours de la bagarre, l'astronef finit par échouer au Laos. L'aveugle noir succombe à ses blessures tandis que Mark et la conductrice de métro qui tient dans ses bras la petite fille rencontrent deux asiatiques, Sua et Kanya. Ces derniers, un frère et une sœur qui appartiennent au triangle d'or, s'aident mutuellement pour combattre la menace extraterrestre. Ils se réfugient dans un temple bouddhiste où Mark, Audrey et la jeune fille rencontrent un scientifique du nom de Harper. Celui-ci a trouvé un remède contre les effets de la lumière hypnotique dans le sang de la jeune fille. Avec ce remède versé dans une seringue, Mark s'infiltre dans le vaisseau extra-terrestre et parvient à l'injecter dans une bombe extraterrestre qui rend la conscience à tous les humains qui ont été transformés en alien et tue le chef des envahisseurs. Dix ans plus tard, le bébé qui est devenu adulte est à la tête de la résistance humaine, traquant les extra-terrestres jusqu'au confins de l'univers pour les éliminer.

In 2014, 17-year-old high school senior and aspiring inventor David Raskin (Jonny Weston) is admitted into MIT, but is unable to afford its tuition fees. Upon learning his mother, Kathy Raskin (Amy Landecker), is planning to sell the house, David enlists his sister Christina (Virginia Gardner) and his friends Adam Le (Allen Evangelista) and Quinn Goldberg (Sam Lerner) to go through the belongings of his father, Ben Raskin (Gary Weeks), an inventor who died in a car crash on David's 7th birthday, in the hope of finding something that David can use to get a scholarship. David ends up finding an old camera with a video recording of his birthday, in which he briefly spots his 17-year-old self in a reflection. The four later find the blueprints of a temporal relocation device that Ben was developing for the United States military named "Project Almanac," and use the available resources to build a functional time machine, including hydrogen canisters stolen from their school. David, Christina, Adam, and Quinn later use the battery from the car of David's longtime crush, Jessie Pierce (Sofia Black D'Elia), who is attending a party in the neighborhood, to charge up the machine, and successfully send a toy car back in time, blowing out the power for the entire neighborhood. They end up being caught by Jessie and recruit her to their experiment.

The story begins five days after the assault on the Abnegation faction by Erudite leader Jeanine's mind-controlled Dauntless soldiers. Slacker David Wong beheads a zombie skinhead with an axe and asks whether an axe that had its handle and head replaced over time is still the same axe. Angelina (Hinshaw) is an 18-year-old girl not far from graduating from high school. Her boyfriend (Weston) suggests that she take naked pictures of herself and sell them. She is initially hesitant, but eventually does the photo shoot and uses the money to run away to San Francisco with her best friend Andrew (Patel). At a strip club party in the city, Angelina meets a wealthy lawyer by the name of Francis (Franco), who offers to introduce her to a glamorous world of expensive dresses and lavish parties. Angelina also meets Margaret (Graham), a former porn star turned adult film director. Margaret offers Angelina, now using the porn name Cherry, direction in her entry into the San Francisco porn industry. Angelina makes several soft pornography films before deciding to do a hardcore film. After Angelina shoots the film, an angry Francis chastises her before getting them in a car accident. Angelina returns home to find Andrew watching one of her films. After an argument, she decides to leave and meets Margaret at a bar. They make out before returning to Margaret's apartment to have sex. The final scene is of Angelina some time afterwards, having moved in with Margaret and taken on a new job as a porn director.

The film’s opening credits have a lingering sense of unease to them, which is capitalized on as soon as Caroline and Jackie arrive at the “surprise birthday party” Caroline has planned for Jackie (despite her birthday not being for two months and it actually being Caroline‘s birthday) – where the dynamic between the pair (and Ryan, to some degree) is pushed out to the larger group, ratcheted up by rapid cuts and lingering looks between Jackie’s friends. But it’s not just a surprise dinner party that Caroline has put together – when the group ends up back at Jackie’s place, the real “party” is revealed. It’s an intervention for Jackie, headed up by Caroline, who hopes that she and Jackie’s friends can help her with a variety of issues – anorexia, pill abuse, alcoholism, and even sexual promiscuity.
