Born in Oklahoma, though raised in Chicago, Nelson attended Northwestern University and became a founding member of Chicago's Roadworks Theatre Ensemble before moving to Los Angeles.
She is perhaps best known for her starring role as Police Chief Karen Vick on Psych.
Nelson’s career includes roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The O'Keefes (as Ellie O’Keefe), Baby's Day Out, The Fugitive, Frasier, Ally McBeal, The West Wing, Just Shoot Me! and Boy Meets World.
She is a Lutheran.

On a stormy night in March 1980, a distraught Jean Harris arrives at the baronial Purchase, New York home of Herman Tarnower following a five-hour drive from McLean, Virginia. Her goal is to commit suicide beside the pond on his estate after confronting her former lover, who spurned her in favor of his considerably younger secretary-receptionist Lynne Tryforos. When she removes a gun from her handbag, Tarnower attempts to take it away from her, and in the struggle he accidentally is shot and collapses. The narrator (Morgan Freeman) explains how humans were unaware that intelligent extraterrestrials were making plans to occupy Earth. Brittany Aarons (Danielle Panabaker) is one of the many girls who has a crush on popular singer and boy-toy Jordan Cahill (Taran Killam). Bennington Austin "Bink" Cotwell IV (Adam and Jacob Worton), a mischievous baby who lives in a huge mansion with his family, is just about to appear in the social pages of the newspaper. Three criminals, Eddie, Norby, and Veeko, pose as the photographers and kidnap him, demanding a ransom. After the kidnapping, however, they have difficulty controlling him. While trying to get Bink to fall asleep, Norby does so reading Bink's book titled "Baby's Day Out", leaving him unattended. Looking through it, Bink notices a bird on the page and then one by the open window. He follows it out and successfully gets away from his kidnappers, with Eddie falling off the building and into a garbage bin while chasing after him through the rooftop.

Dr. Richard Kimble, a prominent Chicago vascular surgeon, arrives home to find his wife Helen fatally wounded by a one-armed man. Kimble struggles with the killer but he escapes. The lack of evidence of a break-in, Helen's lucrative life insurance policy, and a misunderstood 9-1-1 call result in Kimble's conviction of first-degree murder. Being transported to death row by bus, his fellow prisoners attempt an escape. The pandemonium sends the bus down a ravine and into the path of an oncoming train. Kimble escapes the collision and flees. Deputy U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard and his colleagues Renfro, Biggs, Newman and Poole arrive at the crash site and begin the search for Kimble. Kimble sneaks into a hospital to treat his wounds and alter his appearance. He eludes the authorities, but Gerard corners him at the edge of a storm drain over a dam. Kimble leaps into the raging water and escapes.

The annual battle of the bands is raging. Two rival high schools, Malibu High School and Coldwater Canyon High, have two hot bands; The Firecats and Racer. When the lead singers of both bands, Piper (Evans) and Rick (Bradford), meet, they fall in love with each other and have to fight realities such as peer pressure, the fact they attend rival high schools and even Piper's older brother, Godzilla (Zagarino), try to stop their love from getting stronger. The telephone service called Lovelines, run by J.D. Prescott (Winslow), is right in the middle to help the two stay in love with each other and is also sponsoring the annual battle of the bands where their bands are competing with each other. It all comes down to a masquerade party where everyone from both schools learn that true love does indeed conquer all.
