Pharaoh Rameses I of Egypt has ordered the death of all firstborn Hebrew males after hearing the prophecy of the Deliverer, but a Hebrew woman named Yoshebel saves her infant son by setting him adrift in a basket on the Nile. After breaking his leg photographing a racetrack accident, professional photographer L. B. "Jeff" Jefferies (James Stewart) is confined to his Greenwich Village apartment, using a wheelchair while he recuperates. His rear window looks out onto a small courtyard and several other apartments. During a summer heat wave, he passes the time by watching his neighbors, who keep their windows open to stay cool. The tenants he can see include a dancer he nicknames "Miss Torso", a lonely woman he nicknames "Miss Lonelyhearts", a composer-pianist, several married couples, a middle-aged sculptor, and Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr), a traveling jewelry salesman with a bedridden wife.

Rio Galdez vit dans un village perdu au fin fond de l'Amazonie. Il y exerce le cabotage et son vieux rafiot lui sert à la fois pour un peu de contrebande et la traversée des passagers qui le louent. Le village accueille d'autres déclassés, notamment Jerry Russell, autrefois ingénieur, mais qui a sombré dans l'alcoolisme et n'a plus qu'une obsession: retrouver un trésor fabuleux qui, d'après d'anciens parchemins, se trouverait dans la Vallée des Vents, sur le territoire des indiens Jivaros. Il décide deux compagnons à tenter l'aventure. Justement le jour de leur départ, une jeune femme, Alice Parker, prend passage à bord de l'embarcation de Galdez, pour rejoindre Russell. In early 1950s southern California, Dr. Clayton Forrester (Gene Barry), a scientist who had worked on the Manhattan Project, is fishing with colleagues when a large object crashes near the town of Linda Rosa. At the impact site, he meets Sylvia Van Buren (Ann Robinson) and her uncle, Pastor Matthew Collins (Lewis Martin). Van Buren was told that the meteorite came down at a low angle, while Forrester observes it appears far lighter than normal for its massive size. His Geiger counter also detects it is slightly radioactive, but the object is still too hot to examine closely. Unable to account for these anomalies, Forrester is intrigued and decides to wait in town overnight for the object to cool down.
