Biography
Lou Ye obtient son diplôme de l’Académie du Film de Pékin en 1989 et travaille ensuite comme assistant sur plusieurs tournages. En 1994, sort son premier long métrage, Weekend Lover qui obtiendra le Prix Fassbinder au Festival de Mannheim. Trois de ses films ont été en sélection officielle au Festival de Cannes : La Triade du Papillon en 2003, Une Jeunesse chinoise en 2006, et Nuit d'ivresse printanière en 2009. Son film Mystery a fait partie de la sélection Un certain regard lors du Festival de Cannes 2012.Son film Blind Massage a été sélectionné à la Berlinale 2014 où il a reçu l'Ours d'argent de la meilleure contribution artistique.

Spanning several cities and over a decade, Summer Palace tells the story of Yu Hong (played by Hao Lei), a young woman from the border-city of Tumen, who is accepted to the fictional Beiqing University, a name that evokes either Peking University ("Beida") or Tsinghua University ("Qinghua"). While in school, Yu Hong meets Li Ti, her best friend (played by Hu Lingling), and Zhou Wei, her college boyfriend and the love of her life (played by Guo Xiaodong). The film is divided into two parts. The first begins in the late 1980s (subtitles inform the audience of the place and year at various points in the film), as Yu Hong enters the university. The story follows the transient lives of four people at the margins of Chinese society. An anonymous videographer (Hua Zhongkai) opens the film with a monologue on the eponymous Suzhou River and love. As the film's narrator, the videographer is nevertheless never seen aside from his hands, as the camera serves as his first-person perspective for the audience. He starts by telling the story of a romance between himself and Meimei (Zhou Xun), a performer at a dive bar in Shanghai.
