Sylvain Bursztejn est un producteur français de cinéma, né le 8 septembre 1953, à Paris.

Biography

Après des études d'histoires à l’université Paris-VII, Sylvain Bursztejn se lance dans la réalisation de courts-métrages et de documentaires, puis dans la production de films cinématographiques.

Il a produit plus de vingt quatre films qui ont été sélectionnés dans de nombreux festivals. Halfaouine, l’enfant des terrasses de Ferid Boughedir a fait l'ouverture de la Quinzaine des réalisateurs en 1989 ; Le Chêne de Lucian Pintilie en compétition officielle à Cannes en 1992, Le Cri de la soie d’Yvon Marciano a été présenté la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs en 1996 et Le Cercle parfait d’Ademir Kenović, a fait ouverture de la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs en 1997.

De 1997 à 2001, il devient membre de la Commission d’Agrément des Films de Long Métrage au CNC et a été durant deux années consécutives, membre du Jury de fin d’études de la section Scénario à La Fondation européenne pour les métiers de l'image et du son.

En 2001, il décide de produire son premier film chinois, Hollywood Hong-Kong de Fruit Chan qui est en compétition officielle au Festival de Venise.
À partir de cette découverte de la Chine, il décide de développer de façon régulière des productions d’auteurs chinois.
Sylvain Bursztejn a ainsi produit plus de huit films asiatiques.
En 2006, Voiture de luxe, de Wang Chao, a reçu le grand prix Un Certain Regard à Cannes et Une jeunesse chinoise, de Lou Ye, était sélectionné en compétition officielle. En 2009, Memory of Love de Wang Chao est sorti en août par Bac Films et Nuits d'ivresse printanière de Lou Ye a reçu la Palme du scénario au Festival de Cannes 2009 et est sorti en avril 2010, distribué par Le Pacte. Toujours en 2009, She, a chinese, de Xiaolu Guo, a été récompensé par le Léopard d’Or au Festival du film de Locarno.

Parallèlement, Sylvain Bursztejn continue la production de films français. Il a ainsi produit le documentaire La Fièvre de l’or d’Olivier Weber.

Il dirige la société de production cinématographique Ambre Films.

Spanning several cities and over a decade, Summer Palace tells the story of Yu Hong (played by Hao Lei), a young woman from the border-city of Tumen, who is accepted to the fictional Beiqing University, a name that evokes either Peking University ("Beida") or Tsinghua University ("Qinghua"). While in school, Yu Hong meets Li Ti, her best friend (played by Hu Lingling), and Zhou Wei, her college boyfriend and the love of her life (played by Guo Xiaodong). A Bosnian poet (Hamza) lived with his family in Sarajevo during the hard times in the horrific siege of the city. The war in Bosnia was raging all around them. After sending his wife (Gospoda) and daughter (Miranda) to Croatia, he found at home two orphans Adis and Kerim, who escaped a massacre in their own village. They escaped from their village and came to Sarajevo in search of their aunt, which lived in the neighborhood called Bistrik. Hamza decided to help the boys by shielding them from the horrors of war. Together they fight for survival in this horrible war and the ongoing complete siege of the city. After a long search, Hamza discovers that the aunt of Adis and Kerim was a refugee in Germany. Upon learning this Hamza tries to save the kids by sending them out of the war zone. But the only way out was through the Sarajevo International Airport, which is a very dangerous passage occupied and monitored by Chetniks and their death squads as well as snipers.
