Paige Collins (Rachel McAdams) and her husband Leo (Channing Tatum) come out of a movie theater. On their way home, at a stop sign, Paige unbuckles her seatbelt to lean over and kiss Leo. At that very moment, a truck rams their car from behind and Paige crashes through the windshield. In 1993, following the ousting of the central government and start of a civil war, a major United Nations military operation in Somalia is authorized with a peacekeeping mandate. After the bulk of the peacekeepers are withdrawn, the Mogadishu-based militia loyal to Mohamed Farrah Aidid have declared war on the remaining UN personnel. In response, U.S. Army Rangers, Delta Force counter-terrorist operators, and 160th SOAR aviators are deployed to Mogadishu to capture Aidid, who has proclaimed himself president of the country.

Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) is an American welterweight boxer from Lowell, Massachusetts. Managed by his mother, Alice Ward (Melissa Leo), and trained by his older half-brother, Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), Micky has not had a particularly successful career: He's become a "stepping stone" for other boxers to defeat on their way up. Stu Shepard (Colin Farrell) is an arrogant New York City publicist who has been courting a woman named Pam (Katie Holmes) behind his wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell). He uses the last remaining public phone booth in the city to contact Pam. During the call, he is interrupted by a pizza delivery man, who attempts to deliver a free pizza to him, but Stu rudely turns him away by insulting his weight. As soon as Stu completes his call to Pam, the phone rings. Stu answers, to find that the caller (Kiefer Sutherland), who knows his name, warns him not to leave the booth, and says he will say hello to Pam for him. The film begins with Beau (Hedlund), singing with Kelly (Paltrow), a recovering alcoholic going through rehab. Il a un accrochage avec une étudiante arrivée en retard, qui fait une entrée assez bruyante . Il demande à cette étudiante perturbatrice de lui donner son nom, puis de définir Prénom et Nom, puisqu'il n'est pas sensé , comme de juste de connaître tous les prénoms étrangers. Il fait aussi remarquer que le droit français a évolué depuis Napoléon I, contrairement à la Charia, ce qui est vrai. Il donne pour exemple le choix des prénoms, il plaisante : " avant il fallait choisir le prénom dans le calendrier, à présent on peut appeler son enfant Carte Orange". Du coup, assez bizarrement, il est accusé de racisme. Pour se racheter et un peu manipulé par le directeur de l'université qui « ne peut plus le couvrir », Pierre est contraint de préparer Neïla à un prestigieux concours d’éloquence. Malgré son cynisme et son exigence, Neïla semble trouver en Pierre le mentor dont elle avait besoin. Tous deux vont cependant devoir tout d'abord passer au-dessus de leurs préjugés respectifs.
