Miriam Byrd Nethery (May 17, 1929 – January 6, 2003) was an American film and television actress. She was married to Clu Gulager, the actor who played Billy the Kid on the NBC television series, The Tall Man from 1960 - 2003; their sons are Tom and John Gulager. Nethery was born in Lewisville, Arkansas to Daniel Thompson "Tom" Nethery (1890-1966) and his wife, the former Ruby Estelle Byrd (1892-1982). Her film roles included Bound for Glory (1976) and Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III and Across Five Aprils (both 1990).

The film begins with Leatherface bludgeoning a young woman, Gina, to death with a sledgehammer before beginning the process of cutting off her face in order to make it into a mask. Gina's sister, Sara watches from a nearby window. Leatherface hears Sara outside, and after she flees, he briefly checks outside before going back to work. Some time later, Michelle and her boyfriend Ryan, a couple that constantly argues, both traveling through Texas, pass through a security checkpoint near the excavation of a large number of butchered bodies, a cop approaches them and interrogates them, shortly after they leave and reach the Last Chance Gas Station. At the station, they meet a hitchhiking cowboy named Tex and the station's perverted owner Alfredo. Tex shows Ryan a route on the map that can get them to a town. A fight soon breaks out between Tex and Alfredo when Tex finds the latter spying on Michelle while she uses the station restroom. As Michelle and Ryan flee from the station in their car, they witness Alfredo apparently killing Tex with a shotgun.

In 1914, going from a lawyer to a writer, and then to a film director, is the career path on which we find Leo Harrigan (Ryan O'Neal). But Leo has problems as well, such as being hopelessly smitten with his leading lady, who chooses to grab his attentions by getting herself engaged to his vulgar and ignorant leading man, Buck Greenaway (Burt Reynolds). Leo is forced to move from New Jersey to California to keep one step ahead of the Motion Picture Patents Company, who are out to destroy any non-authorized equipment violating the Edison Trust. Leo finally settles in with other filmmakers in Hollywoodland, California, and makes a series of dramatic, romantic, and comedic shorts as throwaways. While initially believing movies are just a brief flickering kind of entertainment, Leo is profoundly affected by the 1915 world premiere of D.W.
