Nathan George is an African-American supporting actor who was active from 1971-97. He co-won a 1969 Obie Award with Ron O'Neal for Charles Gordone's Pulitzer Prize-winning play "No Place to be Somebody." This performance also received a Drama Desk Award. He acted in Brubaker (1980), Klute (1971), Serpico (1973), Harsh Light (1997), his last film, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and was one of the leads in Short Eyes (1977).

In 1969 a mysterious man (Robert Redford) arrives at Wakefield State Prison in Arkansas. As an inmate, he immediately witnesses rampant abuse and corruption, including open and endemic sexual assault, torture, worm-ridden diseased food, insurance fraud and a doctor charging inmates for care. Short Eyes is set in an unnamed prison in New York City, whose inmates are predominantly black or Puerto Rican. One day, Clark Davis, a young, middle-class white man accused of raping a young girl, arrive. His fellow prisoners immediately turn on him — pedophiles are considered the lowest form of prison life — except for Juan, one of the institution's older prisoners, who treats him with dignity. While Davis insists he doesn't remember raping the girl, he admits that he has molested several other children.

Working as a uniformed patrolman, Frank Serpico excels at every assignment. The film begins with the disappearance of Pennsylvania executive Tom Gruneman (played by Robert Milli).
