Se déroulant entre le 9 mai 1940 (la veille de l’offensive allemande) et début juin 1940, le film se focalise sur le personnage de Churchill et son entourage, en partie par l'œil de sa nouvelle secrétaire privée , chargée de taper télégrammes et courriers. D'abord pressenti comme prochain Premier ministre, Churchill se heurte à une opposition favorable à des pourparlers de paix (en premier Lord Halifax et Chamberlain). Puis on le suit à la tête du gouvernement, dans les affres de la douleur des choix difficiles. Notamment lorsque la guerre éclair refoule les 300 000 hommes de l'armée britannique à Dunkerque, le dos à la mer. Churchill ordonne le sacrifice d'une unité chargée d'une diversion (30e brigade motorisée commandée par le brigadier Nicholson à Calais) et la mobilisation des embarcations civiles pour secourir les armées française et anglaise encerclées à Dunkerque : c'est l'« opération Dynamo » qui débute le 26 mai.

In 1820, the whaling ship Essex is crewed by the Captain George Pollard, Jr., first officer Owen Chase, second officer Matthew Joy, and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson. In a pre-credit sequence Effie Gray is seen walking through a garden speaking about a fairy story in which a girl married a man with wicked parents. After the credits, the marriage of Effie to John Ruskin in Perth, Scotland is seen. The couple travel to London to stay with his parents. Effie soon begins to feel isolated, especially as she is repeatedly belittled by John's mother. The film begins in September 2008 (opening against the backdrop of news of the Islamabad Marriott Hotel bombing) with an elderly Lady Thatcher buying milk unrecognized by other customers and walking back from the shop alone. Over the course of three days, we see her struggle with dementia and with the lack of power that comes with old age, while looking back on defining moments of her personal and professional life, on which she reminisces with her (now-dead) husband, Denis Thatcher, whose death she is unable to fully accept. She is shown as having difficulty distinguishing between the past and present. A theme throughout the film is the personal price that Thatcher has paid for power. Denis is portrayed as somewhat ambivalent about his wife's rise to power, her son Mark lives in South Africa and is shown as having little contact with his mother, and Thatcher's relationship with her daughter Carol is at times strained.

It is set in 1824 as Beethoven (Ed Harris) is finishing his Ninth Symphony. He is plagued by deafness, loneliness and personal trauma. A fictional character, a new copyist, Anna Holtz (Diane Kruger) is engaged to help the composer finish preparing the score for the first performance. Anna is a young conservatory student and aspiring composer. Her understanding of his work is such that she corrects mistakes he has made, while her personality opens a door into his private world. Beethoven is initially skeptical, but slowly comes to trust Anna's assistance and eventually grows fond of her. By the time the piece is performed, her presence is a necessity and she helps him conduct the premiere from a spot hidden amongst the orchestra.
