En Italie, l'aristocratique et richissime famille Canali est propriétaire d'une carrière de marbre. C'est le séduisant fils Guido qui s'occupe de son exploitation. Guido et Luisa, fille de l'un de ses employés, tombent réciproquement amoureux et font des projets de mariage. La tyrannique comtesse Canali n'entend pas que son fils puisse compromettre la famille avec une roturière. Sans aucun état d'âme, elle va user de tous les stratagèmes pour mettre fin à leur liaison. Quand elle apprend que Luisa est enceinte, elle dissimule l'évènement à Guido en expédiant illico celui-ci en Angleterre où elle a arrangé à son insu son mariage avec une noble héritière. Elle intercepte ensuite toutes les lettres que Guido envoie à Luisa qui vient à penser que son amant l'a abandonnée tandis que Guido la croit morte. Luisa donne naissance à un garçon et l'existence de ce bâtard insupporte tellement la comtesse qu'elle organise son enlèvement puis simule sa disparition dans un incendie. Luisa, désespérée, entre au couvent et prend le voile sous le nom de sœur Addolorata.

The protagonist of the film, set in 1700, is Figaro, the barber of Seville, which is likely to be arrested because although there is a ban opens his shop on Sundays. Toto Esposito is a young lover who tries to abduct his beloved to marry her. However, Toto is wrong, and kidnaps an ugly woman named Carmela, who loves him, and chases him when Toto escapes. In a last attempt to escape by train from Carmela, Totò meets his friend Amilcare and a beautiful American journalist named Lana Ross, which offers the two a deal. Toto and Amilcare have to pretend detectives, who are investigating the death of many girls at the hands of a serial killer nicknamed "Bluebeard". Toto has to be the main dish of deception, because he has to pretend to be the boyfriend of Lana, who in the meantime is trying to fool the murderess Bluebeard, pretending to be in love with him.

In 1950 in Australia Aunt Agatha writes to Toto, informing him not to send him in Italy even a penny until he is married. Toto is in fact a great bachelor who dabbles in sculpture and live in luxury with the money of her aunt. Now Toto is threatened and forced to be with a woman just because Aunt would soon come to Rome to meet the new couple. At the end bull is mistaken for a delinquent because of mistaken identity and misunderstanding continues when they come into the house of Toto's aunt and the new "wife", or a woman who is made to pay for pretending to be his wife Toto.

En 1950, l'énergique et déterminé tante Agata, qui vit en Australie, fatiguée de la vie de Bohème que conduit son neveu Totò, sculpteur d'avant-garde à Rome, essaye d'y remédier en le faisant épouser sa pupille Adelina. Pour cela, elle envoie une photo de la jeune fille dans une lettre dans laquelle elle informe Totò de sa décision et où elle annonce qu'elles vont lui rendre visite prochainement. Mais, par erreur, la photo envoyée est celle de la très laide femme de chambre d'Agata : ainsi Totò est confronté au choix entre se marier contre sa volonté ou renoncer à la rente de la tante.

Naples. Rosa et Guglielmo, gérant d'un garage, sont un couple paisible et harmonieux. L'arrivée d'un client louche et de son acolyte Emilio, autrefois amoureux de Rosa, va perturber ce bel équilibre. Emilio tente de s'attirer l'amitié de Guglielmo afin d'agrandir le garage et d'en prendre progressivement le contrôle. Il exerce, en outre, un chantage et des pressions continuelles sur Rosa, la menaçant de révéler à son époux leur prétendue liaison passée. Rosa, désireuse de clarifier la situation, accepte un rendez-vous d'Emilio. Mais, Guglielmo les surveille, et, ivre de jalousie, finit par abattre Emilio. Il s'embarque ensuite pour l'Amérique, désireux d'échapper aux foudres de la Justice. Découvert et reconnu dans l'Ohio, il est ramené en Italie. Son avocat convainc Rosa de mentir au tribunal, en affirmant qu'elle cherchait à le quitter pour rejoindre Emilio. Ce faux aveu permet aux jurés de rendre un verdict de clémence à l'égard de Guglielmo. L'avocat lui dévoile alors la réalité des faits : celle de l'innocence de Rosa et du sacrifice qu'elle a consenti pour le sauver de l'emprisonnement. À son tour, Guglielmo accourt pour empêcher Rosa, son épouse, de commettre un acte de désespoir.
