Nobuo Nakagawa (中川 信夫, Nakagawa Nobuo, 18 April 1905 – June 17, 1984) was a Japanese film director, most famous for the stylized, folk tale-influenced horror films he made in the 1950s and 1960s.

Biography

Né à Kyoto, Nakagawa est tôt influencé par la littérature prolétarienne et rédige des revues amateurs de films pour le magazine Kinema Junpō. Il rejoint les Makino Film Productions en 1929 comme assistant réalisateur et travaille auprès de Masahiro Makino. Lorsque les studios font faillite en 1932, il passa à la société de production d'Utaemon Ichikawa et fait ses débuts de réalisateur en 1934 avec Yumiya Hachiman Ken. Il travaille plus tard pour la Tōhō où il réalise des comédies avec Enoken et même des documentaires durant la guerre. Après la guerre, c'est à la Shintōhō qu'il se fait connaître pour ses adaptations filmées des kaidan japonais, en particulier sa magistrale version de Tokaido Yotsuya kaidan en 1959.

Son film le plus connu du public occidental est L'Enfer (地獄, Jigoku) (1960), dont il est coscénariste.

Il tourne de nombreux kaidan pour la télévision. Son dernier film est Koheiji est vivant en 1982. Nobuo Nakagawa a réalisé près de cent de films et écrit 24 scénarios entre 1930 et 1982.

A young Tokyo theology student, Shirō (Shigeru Amachi), is set to marry his girlfriend, Yukiko (Utako Mitsuya), the daughter of his professor, Mr. Yajima. After announcing the engagement, Shirō's dark and unsettling colleague, Tamura (Yôichi Numata), drives Shirō home, suggesting that Shirō had been sleeping with Yukiko for some time. Taking a side street at Shirō's request, Tamura hits and kills drunken yakuza gang leader, Kyōichi. Though Shirō wants to stop, Tamura keeps driving, stating that it does not concern him and that ultimately, the murder is Shirō's fault for asking him to drive down the street. Unbeknown to either of them, Kyōichi's mother (Kiyoko Tsuji) witnessed everything and resolves to find and kill them.

Ruthless samurai Iemon Tamiya wants to marry Iwa and when her father refuses, Iemon kills him and disposes of the body with assistance of Naosuke. Later, tiring of his wife and wishing to marry the heiress Ume Itō, Iemon plots to murder his wife by mixing a poison into her tea and also killing her admirer Takuetsu. Her health deteriorates into a slow agonizing death. The ghosts of Iwa and Takuetsu appear and take vengeance on Iemon and his new wife.
