Nami Matsushima (Meiko Kaji) is set up by her boyfriend, a crooked police detective named Sugimi (Isao Natsuyagi) to win favor with the Yakuza. She is raped by several drug dealers. She makes a failed attempt to stab Sugimi on the steps of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Headquarters. She is sentenced to do hard time in a women's prison. Matsushima is given the number 701. The prison is run by sadistic and lecherous male guards. The prisoners are forced to walk up and down a stair-like contraption naked with male guards watching from below. While in prison she meets inmates like Yuki Kida (Yayoi Watanabe) who was committed for fraud and theft, Otsuka (Akemi Negishi), jailed for burglary and extortion, and Katagiri (Rie Yokoyama) who has been impounded for arson and illegally disposing of a body. On the outside, Sugimi and the Japanese mafia orchestrate a plan in which Matsushima will succumb to an "accidental" death in prison. They enlist the help of Katagiri, pulling on her ties to both Sugimi and the mafia, and quickly set their plan in motion.

A young Tokyo theology student, Shirō (Shigeru Amachi), is set to marry his girlfriend, Yukiko (Utako Mitsuya), the daughter of his professor, Mr. Yajima. After announcing the engagement, Shirō's dark and unsettling colleague, Tamura (Yôichi Numata), drives Shirō home, suggesting that Shirō had been sleeping with Yukiko for some time. Taking a side street at Shirō's request, Tamura hits and kills drunken yakuza gang leader, Kyōichi. Though Shirō wants to stop, Tamura keeps driving, stating that it does not concern him and that ultimately, the murder is Shirō's fault for asking him to drive down the street. Unbeknown to either of them, Kyōichi's mother (Kiyoko Tsuji) witnessed everything and resolves to find and kill them.

Cinq étudiantes de Tokyo arrivent en train à la gare de Kobuchizawa. Elles profitent de leur longue correspondance pour visiter la pittoresque petite ville provinciale. En Birmanie pendant la Guerre du Pacifique, Tsuruta et Oki se retrouvent seuls dans la jungle après que leur compagnie s'est fait décimer. Ils finissent par tomber sur le sergent Aoji qui les mène au campement de son régiment. Le soldat Oki, professeur de littérature française avant la guerre, retrouve-là Goro Maki un de ses anciens étudiants. Ils sont nombreux dans ce campement de soldats en guenilles et affamées à être d'anciens étudiants qui se sont portés volontaires pour partir au front. Les officiers de carrière qui les mènent n'ont que mépris pour ces intellectuels et se gardent bien de partager leurs rations avec eux. Lorsque l'ordre tombe de rejoindre des positions qu'il faudra tenir jusqu'à la mort, les blessés et malades trop diminués pour marcher sont abandonnés avec une grenade chacun et l'ordre de se faire exploser plutôt que de se faire prendre par l'ennemi. Les valides rejoignent leurs dernières positions de combat et se font décimer tandis que leurs officiers les abandonnent à leur sort et prennent la fuite.
