1 – Legenda activistului în inspecție (en français : « La légende de la visite officielle ») Le maire de Visurești et son assistant sont sur les dents : on attend la visite officielle d'un dignitaire étranger (un certain Giscard d'Estaing). Pour cela, on a tout repeint, on a sorti les drapeaux, on va mettre des vaches partout et on a fait apprendre un poème au fils du maire. Et lorsque les camarades-inspecteurs du parti viennent passer l’inspection, ils refusent qu’on sorte les vaches (il y a un Indien dans la délégation) pour les remplacer par des moutons qu’il faut ramener, du coup, des pâturages.

Une femme vit seule en périphérie d'un village en Russie. The film is an adaptation from Vasil’ Bykaw's short story. The action is set in 1942 on the territory of Belarus occupied by the German army. The Germans face strong resistance from the Partisans and hatred of local people. The Partisans suspect Sushenya, a track-walker, of collaboration with the Nazis because he was first arrested and then suddenly released after they had blown up a German train. Two of them capture Sushenya and lead him to the forest where they are going to shoot him as a traitor. They fall into a trap set by the Germans who severely wound one of the partisans. Sushenya attempts to save his executioner's life by carrying the wounded Partisan on his back to the nearest village. Nevertheless, Sushenya is under suspicion. He laments that he was a well-respected and trustworthy village resident, raising a family in peace, however the war changed that forever.

It is summer, and young driver Georgy takes his light truck on a trip to another town with a cargo of flour. He is stopped at a road police post by a pair of rude and corrupt policemen. While they are flirting with the woman they stopped earlier, Georgy manages to grab his papers and leave unnoticed. There he picks up a hitchhiker, an old man who recounts him a disturbing story. Soon after WWII, while returning home from the front, he was blatantly robbed by a station commandant, and later killed him in retaliation. On another stop the old man leaves as abruptly as he appeared.

Dante Remus Lăzărescu (Ioan Fiscuteanu), a cranky retired engineer, lives alone as a widower with his three cats in a Bucharest apartment. In the grip of extreme pain, Lăzărescu calls for an ambulance, but when none arrives, he asks for his neighbors' help. Not having the medicine Lăzărescu wants, the neighbors give him some pills for his nausea. A neighbor reveals that Lăzărescu is a heavy drinker. His neighbor helps Lăzărescu back to his apartment and to bed. They call again for an ambulance.
