Jim Chéri et sa femme Darling vivent dans une maison d'une petite ville tranquille de la Nouvelle-Angleterre. In the near future, the Department of Emotional Integrity (D.E.I.) issues relationship scores that affect the standings of everyone in society. In California, Ben and Sara are an older couple reconciling their past relationship while Seth and Haley are a younger couple registering for their first relationship with the D.E.I. Ben is denied a job at Origin, a design company, due to a low relationship score while Sara secures a business loan for a new cafe due to her high relationship score. Ben is later walked out on by his date, also due to his low relationship score. Henry then convinces Ben to make an appointment at the D.E.I. with his ex-girlfriend Sara to boost his score. Meanwhile, Seth and Haley are separated as they head to different colleges in California. At the D.E.I., Ben and Sara clash due to their conflicting recounts of their past relationship. However, they reconcile and each sign off on 50-50 responsibility. Seth and Haley then register for their first and also long-distance relationship with the recurring D.E.I. agent, Randall. This boosts Ben's score to land the job as a designer at Origin.

Ed Cole (Haley Joel Osment) feels like he is letting his life go by without him. In order to enjoy his retirement, a father takes drastic measures to get his twenty-something, slacker sons to move out and fend for themselves. They continue to try and make their own film company, called Cathkart productions. A young woman, Alice (Selma Blair), goes to the gynecologist with a mysterious ache inside her. When one doctor can't figure out just what the problem is, she sees another, and still more, until finally one specialist finds that she has an enormous, empty tundra inside of her, the opening of which is her vagina. She is forced into a media parade, brought onto talk shows so that the specialist can talk about his discovery. Alice is treated coldly, like her emptiness is the only thing important about her, and still she aches. A challenge is put forth to see who would be willing to enter the vast tundra and see where it might lead; several men enter and travel for a long time, but find nothing but ice. One young man enters and does not come back out. At the end, Alice goes to a beach and stands by the water. In a rush, the ice from the emptiness inside her flows out, freezing the ocean, and the young man appears beside her.
