Novembre 1999. Après le décès de son épouse, Trond Sander, âgé de 67 ans, s'est retiré d'Oslo dans un petit village de l'est de la Norvège. Le millénaire touche à sa fin et il semblerait que ce soit aussi le cas de la vie de Trond. Une nuit d'hiver, il reconnaît soudain une vieille connaissance de sa jeunesse en son voisin, Lars. Leur rencontre nous rappelle des souvenirs de 1948, année où Trond passa tout un été dans une simple cabane en bois au bord de la rivière avec son père qu'il admirait beaucoup. Longs après-midi dans la forêt, promenades en chevaux sauvages et travail acharné à l'abattage du bois commencent à se fondre dans une série d'images du bonheur sans soucis mais aussi d'expériences fatidiques.

Princess Caroline Matilda of Great Britain is shown writing a letter to her children in which she professes to tell them the truth. In flashback, Caroline talks of England, as she was about to leave to marry Christian VII of Denmark. Lulu, une jeune Danoise de 14 ans attirée par le surnaturel, déménage avec sa famille dans une petite ville de province. Eleven days before the parliamentary election, the Centre Party's main candidate, who is about to become the next Danish Prime Minister and his wife have a car accident. His situation is critical and nobody knows if he will survive. Even his wife, who is also hospitalised, is not informed. The next day, Torp is assigned to cover the election. Quickly, he is drawn into the internal power struggle in the Centre Party where two very different politicians, Erik Dreyer and Lone Kjeldsen, show interest in gaining power and potentially becoming the next Prime Minister. Torp, the son of a previous justice minister, writes his first front-page story after a tip-off from the Centre Party press coordinator, Peter Schou. The story turns out to be "planted spin" in order to damage Lone Kjeldsen (Nastja Arcel) to allow the advantage to Dreyer who benefits from her lost credibility.

Nói Kristmundsson is a 17-year-old living in a small unnamed remote fishing village in western Iceland with his grandmother Lína (Anna Friðriksdóttir). His father Kiddi (Þröstur Leó Gunnarsson), an alcoholic taxi driver, also lives in town, but Nói appears to have a distant relationship with him. As an alopecia totalis his appearance is strikingly different from others in the village. Much of his time is spent either wandering the desolate town, at the town bookstore, or in a hidden cellar at his grandmother's house, which serves as his private sanctuary. The town is a sort of purgatory for Nói, surrounded by mountains and attainable only by boat during the winter, when the roads through the mountain passes are snowed over. There are signs that Nói is highly intelligent, but he is totally uninterested in school and seems to have an adversarial relationship with the faculty, particularly his math teacher. More often than not he cuts class to go to the local gas station, where he frequently breaks into the slot machine and rigs it for an assured jackpot. The bleak town seem to offer few prospects for the future, and Nói doesn't seem to fit in there.
