A newly separated couple Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Kyra Sedgwick) live in different homes. After Clyde picks up their two children, Emily "Em" (Natasha Calis) and Hannah (Madison Davenport), for the weekend, they stop at a yard sale where Em becomes intrigued by an old wooden box that has Hebrew letters engraved on it. Clyde buys the box for Em, and they later find that there seems no way to open it. That night, Em hears whispering coming from the box. She is able to open it, and finds a tooth, a dead moth, a wooden figurine, and a ring, which she begins to wear. Em becomes solitary, and her behavior becomes increasingly sinister; she stabs her father in the hand with a fork. The house becomes infested with moths.

The first day of Greg Heffley's middle school ends negatively; he learns about the Cheese Touch which is a rotten piece of cheese on the basketball court which everyone avoids, discovers the ups and downs to the school, and his best friend Rowley Jefferson (Robert Capron) embarrasses them both. In 2010, three friends are miserable with their lives: Adam Yates (John Cusack) has been dumped by yet another girlfriend, and his geeky 20-year-old nephew Jacob (Clark Duke) lives in his basement, playing Second Life, with no idea who his father is. Lou Dorchen (Rob Corddry) is a party animal way past his prime. Nick Webber-Agnew (Craig Robinson) has a dead-end job at a dog spa and an unfaithful and controlling wife named Courtney (Kellee Stewart). Lou almost dies from carbon monoxide poisoning in what his friends think is a suicide attempt. Adam and Nick sympathetically take him and Jacob to the site of some of their most memorable weekends, the Kodiak Valley Ski Resort. Upon arrival at the resort, they see that Kodiak Valley has fallen on hard times as well. They are shown to their room by a hostile one-armed bellhop named Phil Wedmaier (Crispin Glover). During a night of heavy drinking in a hot tub, they spill a can of an illegal Russian energy drink called "Chernobly" on the hot tub's controls. The next day, they wake up in 1986. They see each other as their normal age, but in their reflections and to other people, they appear as they did in 1986, except Jacob, who was not yet born. They arrive during "Winterfest '86," the weekend when Poison played to a huge crowd at the then-thriving Kodiak Resort.

The "Minutemen", a team of costumed crime fighters, was formed in 1939 in response to a rise in costumed gangs and criminals; the "Watchmen" was similarly formed decades later. Their existence has dramatically affected world events: in particular, Doctor Manhattan's superpowers help the United States win the Vietnam War, resulting in President Richard Nixon being reelected. Doctor Manhattan gives the West a strategic advantage over the Soviet Union, which by the 1980s threatens to escalate the Cold War into a nuclear war. During that time, growing anti-vigilante sentiment in the country leads to masked crime-fighters being outlawed. While many of the heroes retire, Doctor Manhattan and the Comedian operate as government-sanctioned agents, and Rorschach continues to operate outside the law.

The film takes place in a 1950s-esque alternate universe where radiation from space has turned the dead into zombies. This resulted in the "Zombie Wars", where humanity battled zombies to prevent a zombie apocalypse, with humanity the ultimate victor. The radiation still plagues humanity, as all those who die after the original contamination turn into the undead, unless the dead body is disposed of by decapitation or cremation. In order to continue living normal lives, communities are fenced with the help of a governing corporation named Zomcon. Madison (Chong) and her assistant Hockstetter (Zamprogna) are astronomers who track near-Earth objects in space. They are not taken seriously by the scientific community. When they locate and track a massive asteroid on a collision course for Earth, Madison takes her findings to government scientist Covington (LaBelle). Initially he pays her some attention but, under pressure from Air Force General Dutton (Moriarty), dismisses her. In desperation she takes her research to Donovan (Sabato), a former Air Force officer who was discharged under Don't ask, don't tell. Joining with Donovan's active-duty lover, Mark (Boisvert), the four hatch a plan to infiltrate an Air Force base that houses a massive laser weapon to destroy the asteroid. The Burial Society tells the story of Sheldon Kasner, whose existence has recently turned to one of quiet anxiety.
