Emily Jenkins (Renée Zellweger) is a social worker living in Oregon, who is assigned to investigate the family of ten-year-old Lillith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland), as her grades have declined and an emotional rift with her parents has emerged. Emily suspects that the parents have been mistreating Lillith. Emily's fears are confirmed when Lillith's parents try to kill her by gassing her in the oven at home. Emily saves Lillith with the help of Detective Mike Barron (Ian McShane). Lillith is originally sent to a children's home, but she begs Emily to look after her instead. The film takes place in the town of Paradise, Arizona (a ghost town in real life), where the volatile Postal Dude, after being mocked at a job interview, kicked out of his local unemployment office and discovering that his morbidly obese wife is cheating on him, is more than a little angry and is desperate to get enough cash to finally leave his dead-end town. He decides to team up with his Uncle Dave, a slovenly con artist turned doomsday cult leader who owes the US government over a million dollars in back-taxes. With the help of Uncle Dave's right-hand man Richie and an army of big-breasted, scantily clad cult members, the Dude devises a plan to hijack a shipment of 2,000 Krotchy Dolls, a rare, sought-after plush toy resembling a giant scrotum. Uncle Dave plans to sell them online, where their prices have reached as high as $4,000 a doll.

Gray Baldwin (Heather Graham), a family oriented and quiet bachelorette, lives a close-knit life with her brother, Sam (Tom Cavanagh). Mystery Inc. Arrivé sur place, les deux amies sont vite bloquées par une tempête de neige, Barbara s'en allant faire des courses à l'épicerie du coin est importunée un inconnu, les deux femmes se barricadent et s'emparent d'une carabine exposé dans une vitrine de la location, Liz annonce alors à son amie qu'elle a tendu un piège à son ex-mari et qu'elle l'attend pour s'en débarrasser, une bagarre s'en suit, Le mari menace Barbara, Liz le tue avec son revolver, mais un complice masqué survient et tue Liz, Barbara s'enfuit et appelle au secours Gunnar son petit ami qui lui avait dit travailler pas très loin. On apprend alors que Gunnar est en fait le complice masqué et qu'un seul but l'anime : récupérer la mallette, Après une course poursuite en voiture Barbara parviendra à faire exploser la voiture de Gunnar. En reprenant ses activités, elle se fait porter le courrier de Liz, découvre une enveloppe avec une clé, c'est celle du coffre de sa banque. Elle s'y rend et le film se termine ainsi.
