Samantha (Courteney Cox Arquette) is a travel journalist who is still recovering from the break-up with her last boyfriend, when her psychiatrist (Carol Kane) ironically suffers a nervous breakdown. While Samantha is canceling her appointments, her new neighbor (David James Elliott) comes for a session. Having never met the real Dr. Rosenberg, she poses as her shrink in an attempt to steer him away from his girlfriend and towards her. Because of her new situation, Samantha ends up seeing a few of Dr. Rosenberg's other patients, including eccentric magazine salesman Henry (David Arquette). Thus leading her to question her life, including whether her 'perfect man' is actually what she truly desires after all.

Chicago. Afin de mener à bien le plan pour rembourser de la dette, Veronica prend contact avec Alice, Linda et Amanda, les trois veuves des complices de son défunt mari pour l'assister. Seuls Alice et Linda viennent au lieu de rendez-vous. Alors qu'elle est chez Amanda pour lui parler, Veronica découvre le flacon d'un parfum qu'elle a offert à Henry et conclut qu'il a une liaison avec Amanda et qu'il est le père du nouveau-né de la jeune femme. Veronica, dévastée, quitte les lieux. Cette dernière charge Alice d'acquérir une fourgonnette achetée lors d'une vente aux enchères et trois pistolets Glock. Linda, quant à elle, doit déchiffrer le plan. Grâce à son amant occasionnel avec qui elle entretient une relation transactionnelle, Alice identifie le projet comme un coffre-fort dans la maison de Jack Mulligan.

Jane, an operative for the private intelligence firm Hiller Brood, is assigned by her boss Sharon to infiltrate The East, an underground activist, anarchist and ecologist organization that has launched several attacks against corporations in an attempt to expose their corruption. Calling herself Sarah, she joins local drifters in hitching rides on trains, and when one drifter, Luca, helps her escape from the police, she identifies the symbol of The East hanging from Luca's car mirror. Sarah self-inflicts an arm injury that she tells Luca was caused in the escape so he can get medical attention for her. He takes her to an abandoned house in the woods where members of The East live and one of the members, Doc, treats her cut.

Doug Stauber (Seann William Scott) is the assistant manager of a branch of Donaldson's, a supermarket chain in Chicago. He believes that he is a "shoo-in" for manager of a Donaldson's that is scheduled for construction just a few blocks away from his home.
