Walter "Spec" O'Donnell (April 9, 1911 – October 14, 1986) was an American film actor. He appeared in 191 films between 1923 and 1978. He was born in Fresno, California and died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. He worked frequently for producer Hal Roach, often appearing in silent comedies as the bratty son of Max Davidson or Charley Chase. His sound era roles were mostly uncredited bits, though he has the unusual distinction of playing the same role (a newsboy) in both an original film and its remake: Princess O'Hara and It Ain't Hay.

In the Arizona desert, truck driver Martin "Rubber Duck" Penwald is passed by a woman in a Jaguar E-Type, which leads to an encounter with a sheriff's deputy. Proceeding on his way, Rubber Duck runs into fellow truck drivers Pig Pen/Love Machine and Spider Mike, when another "trucker" informs them over the C.B. that they are okay to increase their speed. The "trucker" turns out to be cold county Sheriff "Dirty Lyle" Wallace, a long-time nemesis of the Duck, who extorts them for $70 each.

In the early years of the twentieth century, an aging ex-lawman, Steve Judd (Joel McCrea), is hired to guard a shipment of gold from a high country mining camp to the town of Hornitos, California. Six miners were recently murdered trying to transport their gold on the one trail leading down from the crest of the Sierra Nevada. In his prime, Judd was a tough and respected lawman, but now his threadbare clothes and spectacles serve as reminders that he is long past his prime. The year is 1928. Samuel Fulton (Charles Coburn) is an old and lonely New York millionaire who has decided to leave his fortune to the family of the late Millicent Blaisdell. Millicent is the only woman he has ever been in love with and they briefly dated, until she dumped him because she did not return his love. Jerry Flynn (Cary Grant) has to come up with $100,000 within a week to keep his theater. Pat Marvin (Nancy Kelly) is a small town photographer from Iowa Falls who gets a job offer in New York City for a magazine. She was hired due to a misunderstanding from the magazine's publisher, and sports fanatic James R. Tarlock (Richard Gaines) that she was a man. Larry Burke (Chester Morris), the magazine's editor, is thrilled that his new co-worker is a female, and takes an immediate interest in her. Pat's boyfriend Ben Scribner (Phillip Terry) is less enthusiastic about the girl who he is intending on marrying, leaving him for a job in the big city, and goes as far as following her to make sure that she is not unfaithful to him. Pat, meanwhile, quickly impresses Larry by providing him photographs of Dolores Tucker (Jane Farrar), as she is lying on the ground in a restaurant's toilet after a failed suicide attempt. The publishing of the photo unleashes some controversy, because Dolores is the estranged wife of millionaire Sonny Tucker (Charles Arnt). To deliver him a successful follow-up, Pat travels to Sonny's apartment to photograph him, and disguises herself as a chorus girl to seek entrance. Inside, she quickly flatters him, enabling herself to take as many photos as she wants. Dolores walks in minutes later, and grows convinced that Pat is Sonny's mistress.

After the events of The Wolf Man and Ghost of Frankenstein, a duo of graverobbers break into the Talbot family crypt to rob the grave of Larry Talbot (the "Wolf Man" (Lon Chaney, Jr.)), of valuables buried with him, on the night of a full moon. During the grave robbery, the graverobbers remove the Wolfsbane buried with him and he is awakened from death by the full moon shining down on his uncovered body, and kills one of them. Seeking a cure for the curse that causes him to transform into a werewolf with every full moon, Talbot leaves Britain and goes to the remains of Frankenstein's castle, as he hopes to find there the notes of Dr. Ludwig Frankenstein so he might learn how to permanently end his own life through scientific means.

Wilbur Hoolihan (Lou Costello) accidentally kills a hack horse owned by King O'Hara (Cecil Kellaway) and his daughter, Princess (Patsy O'Connor) by feeding it candy. In hopes of raising enough money to replace it, he and his friend Grover Mockridge (Bud Abbott) visit a gambling parlor. They are successful in raising the money, but before they can purchase a new horse, a con man swindles Wilbur out of his cash. They are informed by some touts that an old horse is available for nothing at one of the tracks. They visit the track and mistakenly take the wrong horse, a champion by the name of Tea Biscuit. They present the horse to O'Hara as a replacement for his deceased horse.

Crooked political boss Paul Madvig (Brian Donlevy) is determined to back reform candidate Ralph Henry (Moroni Olsen) for governor after falling in love with Henry's daughter, Janet (Veronica Lake). Madvig's right-hand man, Ed Beaumont (Alan Ladd), believes the move is a big mistake and rightly distrusts Janet's motives. She is only playing along at her father's request; she is put off by Madvig's crudity and becomes very attracted to the more eclectic Beaumont. He fends off her advances out of strong loyalty to his friend. The deluded Madvig boasts that Henry has practically given him the key to his house; Beaumont warns him that it is liable to be a glass key, one that can break at any moment.
