Swarnalatha (1973 – 12 September 2010) was an Indian playback singer. From 1987 onward, she rendered nearly 7,000 songs in many languages including Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Urdu, Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi and Badaga.

She won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her rendition of the song "Porale Ponnuthayi" from the film Karuththamma. The song was composed by A. R. Rahman, under whose musical direction she recorded many memorable songs. Her distinctive voice, which could effortlessly reach high octaves, quickly made her a name to reckon with in the playback music industry.

Biography

She was born in the village Kizhakkaepparra near Athikkode near Chittur, Palakkad, Kerala, to K. C. Cherukutty and Kalyani. Swarnalatha born with many brothers and sisters was the last born of a big family of music lovers. Her father was a good harmonium player and singer. Her mother also had interest in music. Swarnalatha was trained on the harmonium and keyboard. Swarnalatha's family later moved to Bhadravathi (Paper Town) in Shimoga District, where she had her education. Born in a family of musicians (father K. C. Cherukutty was a singer and harmonium player, while sister Saroja was her music guru initially). Swarnalatha took to music when she was in her teens.

Professor Ilango comes to his native village near Theni, with his college going daughter, Charulatha (Mamta Mohandas). He has taken voluntary retirement from his college service and has come to live in his ancestral house. He plans to do research on folk songs and release a collection as a book. His student Sathiyamurthy (Vishal) assists him in this venture. Charulatha falls for Sathiya, on keenly observing his intellect, humaneness and social awareness. Meanwhile elections are announced to the State Legislature and the parties start finalizing the candidates for the constituencies. When the candidates start filing nominations, the dreadful things happen. Some candidates from both the major parties are murdered and all the candidates get jittery. Lot of candidates withdraw from the fray fearing death. The parties are in a fix on what to do. The Police are on the trace out for the killer. The Election Commission postpones the elections.

Mythili (Reema Sen) showers love and affection on Viswa (Bharath), her neighbor, since childhood. Viswa happens to be the only son of a rich business tycoon Rajasekhar (Girish Karnad), who loses his mother at a young age. Mythili treats Viswa as her younger brother and spends all her time with him. Meanwhile, Ragunandan(Vishal), an income tax officer, turns up at Rajasekhar's house for an IT raid and happens to meet Mythili there. They eventually fall in love and after a series of incidents they get wed locked. They settle in Goa then. The trouble begins when Viswa reaches Goa in search of Mythili. He manages to kidnap Mythili and bring her to Chennai. The reasons for Viswa's obsession and possessiveness towards Mythili unfolds as the movie progresses. Ragunandan who comes back to Goa finds the house deserted. The next door neighbor tells him that Mythili eloped with Viswa. He then begins to track her down and finds that the duo had left to Chennai. Ragunandan reaches Chennai, but is unable to tell his parents the real plight. With the help of Harichandra(Vivek), his colleague, he tries to trace her out. A chance look at the video of their marriage throws light on Viswa’s hatred towards Ragunandan. Now Ragunanthan is convinced that Mythili did not go on her own will. He confronts Viswa’s father but he is of no help. Finally he traces out the location of Viswa’s hideout. Mythili on the other hand pleads with Viswa to release her. She explains that she cannot be his wife and can see him only as a son or a little brother. The plea falls on deaf ears. In a racy climax on high seas, the three protagonists fight it out and Mythili hits Viswa with the boat oars. He plunges in to the sea in an unconscious condition taking Mythili along. Ragunanthan comes at the nick of the time to save her. Even though she had killed him because of her attack on him, she is filled with remorse.

The film begins in a small village in Sri Lanka called Mankulam, where Shyama (Nandita Das) is married to Dileepan (J. D. Chakravarthy), who along with few other Sri Lankan Tamils in the village, is part of the Tamil Tigers rebel association. While having a quiet moment, the couple hears sounds of Sri Lankan army troops approaching. He asks Shyama to leave while he remains in the forest. Shyama realizes that she is pregnant and waits in vain for Dileepan’s return. Her villagers begin fleeing to India to seek refugee due to the war. Shyama is initially stubborn to leave since one of the rebels says that he has seen Dileepan with bullet wounds in the forest, but her relatives convince her to seek refuge for her unborn child's sake. The villagers board a to the shores of Rameswaram. While a local collector takes down the names of the refugees, Shyama gives birth to a baby girl. However, the urge to find her husband and be with her people back home overwhelms Shyama and she leaves behind the newborn girl, hoping that the girl will lead a better life.

Manav (Akshaye Khanna) comes to visit India with his wealthy father Jagmohan Mehta (Amrish Puri), his aunt and uncle, and his father's employees. Kachra Seth runs an empire of collecting garbage, which is merely a front to cover-up for his other business - drug trafficking. He recruits a select group of people to carry out unpleasant tasks - such as beating someone up, or even killing someone. One of his recruits is Jaggu, who will do anything for a price. Jaggu loves Tina but is afraid to tell her. When Jaggu's mom is hospitalized, he comes to Kachra for monetary assistance, he is assigned to a task instead, and unable to complete the task he is apprehended by the police with the assistance of a librarian, and is subsequently found guilty and sent to prison. Jaggu's place is taken by Rajeshwar alias Raja, who is also attracted to Tina and even rescues her from one of Kachra's goons, Chabiley, and they both fall in love. When Jaggu returns from prison, he finds his mom has died, and his sister is missing, believed to have committed suicide. In anger, he concoctes a fool-proof plan to kill the librarian, and he does so. Jaggu does not know that the librarian is none other than Raja's dad, and Raja has sworn to hunt down his dad's killer, no matter what.

Amar Kant Varma (Shahrukh Khan) is a Program executive for All India Radio. He is dispatched from New Delhi to cover festivities in Northeast India.
