Octobre 1965, New York. Les traditionnels géants des Fêtes de Pampelune sont invités à défiler sur la 5ème avenue. Mais les autorités américaines interdisent la participation des deux géants noirs dans le contexte de la ségrégation raciale. C’en est trop pour Manex qui, fidèle à ses convictions et son tempérament rebelle, fausse compagnie à ses collègues. During the Walpurgis Night in the woods adjacent to the village of Passo Borgo, located at the foot of the Carpathian mountains, a couple of young lovers, Tania and Milos, secretly meet. On her way home, Tania is chased and overcome by a "dark shadow" that kills her. Some time later, Jonathan Harker, a young librarian, arrives at the village hired by Count Dracula, a nobleman from the area. Tania's body mysteriously disappears from the cemetery. Le film raconte l'histoire d'un journaliste espagnol contemporain, Robert, qui essaye de renouer des relations avec son père mourant, Manolo. Ce dernier a participé à la guerre civile espagnole. Le journaliste découvre, petit à petit, à travers son travail de recherche sur la vie de son père, que ce dernier était un ami intime de Josémaria Escriva, avec qui il a eu des relations compliquées. Manolo s'est engagé pendant la Guerre d'Espagne, et est tombé amoureux d'une jeune Hongroise, Ildiko. Celle-ci le rejette et se lie à un chef de la Milice, Oriol. Manolo devient jaloux et s'engage sur les chemins de la trahison. Le début du film se déroule à Rome ; ensuite, une grande partie de l'action se passe en Espagne et la scène finale, très émouvante, à la frontière entre l'Espagne et Andorre.

In late 19th century Cartagena, a river port in Colombia, Florentino Ariza falls in love at first sight with Fermina Daza. They secretly correspond and she eventually agrees to marry but her father discovers their relationship and sends her to distant relatives (mainly her grandmother and niece). When she returns some years later, Fermina agrees to marry Dr. Juvenal Urbino, her father's choice. Their fifty-year marriage is outwardly loving, but inwardly marred by darker emotions. Fermina's marriage devastates Florentino, who vows to remain a virgin, but his self-denial is thwarted by a tryst. To help him get over Fermina, his mother throws a willing widow into his bed and he discovers that sex is a very good pain reliever with which he replaces the opium that he had habitually smoked. He begins to record and describe each of his sexual encounters, beginning with the widow, and eventually compiling over 600 entries. A lowly clerk, he plods resolutely over many years to approach the wealth and social standing of Dr. Urbino. When the now-elderly doctor dies suddenly, Florentino immediately and impertinently renews courting Fermina.
