Walter (Ernest) Stradling — né en février 1875 à Plymouth (Angleterre), mort le 4 juillet 1918 à New York (État de New York) — est un directeur de la photographie américain d'origine anglaise.

Biography

Émigré en 1898 aux États-Unis, Walter Stradling débute comme chef opérateur sur Captain Alvarez de Rollin S. Sturgeon (avec Edith Storey et William Desmond Taylor), sorti en 1914.

Il contribue à vingt-sept autres films muets américains sortis jusqu'en 1918, année de sa mort prématurée (à 43 ans), des suites de la grippe espagnole.

En particulier, il dirige les prises de vues de plusieurs films réalisés par Marshall Neilan ayant pour vedette féminine Mary Pickford, dont La Petite Princesse (1917, avec Norman Kerry), L'Enfant de la forêt (1918, avec Thomas Meighan), À chacun sa vie (1918, avec William Scott) et Le Roman de Mary (1918, avec Conway Tearle).

Il est l'oncle d'Harry Stradling Sr. (1901-1970) et le grand-oncle d'Harry Stradling Jr. (né en 1925), tous deux également directeurs de la photographie.

Set in San Francisco during the early 1900s, the film revolves around Amarilly (Mary Pickford), the daughter of a widowed scrubwoman. Amarilly is proud of her hard-working Irish family, and takes care of her five roughhouse brothers. She is engaged to bartender Terry McGowan (William Scott), who gets her a job as a cigarette girl in his cafe after a fire unfairly causes her to lose her job as a theater scrubwoman. While working as a cigarette girl, she meets Gordon Phillips (Norman Kerry), a handsome and wealthy but frivolous young man, who is a society sculptor.

As described in a film magazine, Sara Crewe (Pickford) is treated as a little princess at the Minchin boarding school for children until it is learned that her father has lost his entire fortune, and she is made a slavey (a household servant). She and Becky (Pitts), another slavey, become close friends who share their joys and sorrows. Christmastime draws near and the girls watch the preparations wistfully. Their loneliness arouses the sympathy of a servant of the rich Mr. Carrisford. On the night before Christmas he prepares a spread for the slaveys in their attic. He calls his master Mr. Carrisford (von Seyffertitz) to watch their joy, but both are witness to the slaveys being abused and whipped by Miss Minchin (Griffith). The film revolves around a murder mystery. The story takes place in the mid 19th century. A biracial nurse named Roxy (Jane Wolff) swaps her son with her master's son. That son grows up as Tom Driscoll, while the real Tom grows up as the slave known as Chambers. Rowena Cooper comes from the North and falls in love with Chambers. Chambers is accused of murder and the eccentric lawyer Pudd'nhead Wilson looks for details.
