William E. Snyder (parfois crédité William Snyder), A.S.C., né le 21 septembre 1901 à New York (État de New York), décédé le 4 mars 1984 à San Juan Capistrano (Californie), est un directeur de la photographie (occasionnellement acteur) américain.

Biography

Au cinéma, William E. Snyder débute comme chef opérateur sur un court métrage sorti en 1939 et exerce à ce poste sur soixante-trois films américains au total, le dernier sorti en 1971 (année où il se retire). Mentionnons Les Amours de Carmen de Charles Vidor (1948, avec Rita Hayworth et Glenn Ford) et Les Diables de Guadalcanal de Nicholas Ray (1951, avec John Wayne et Robert Ryan), tournés en Technicolor — procédé pour lequel il se spécialise —, ou encore le classique de la science-fiction L'Étrange Créature du lac noir de Jack Arnold (1954, avec Richard Carlson et Julie Adams), tourné lui en noir et blanc.

À la télévision, entre 1952 et 1970, il contribue à huit séries et à six téléfilms. En particulier, il est directeur de la photographie sur trente-neuf épisodes (diffusés de 1958 à 1970) de la série Le Monde merveilleux de Disney, produite par les Studios Disney (Walt Disney Pictures). Pour ces mêmes studios, il collabore également à quatre téléfilms et surtout, à douze films, de 1960 à 1971 (ex. : Bon voyage ! de James Neilson, en 1962, avec Fred MacMurray et Jane Wyman).

Au cours de sa carrière, William E. Snyder obtient trois nominations à l'Oscar de la meilleure photographie, mais n'en gagne pas.

In 1936 London, mature showgirl Julia Packett (Greer Garson) leads a precarious life. She pretends to be contemplating suicide in order to finagle some money out of a male friend in order to pay her bills. Then, she receives a wedding invitation from her daughter Susan (Elizabeth Taylor). As a young woman, Julia had married wealthy William Packett (Walter Pidgeon). However, after fourteen months of marriage, his disapproving mother (Lucile Watson) had managed to break them up. Julia returned to show business, but left her infant daughter with her husband, so that the child could be raised in more secure circumstances.

The coastal town of Hampton Bay is threatened when a 35-foot great white shark starts chomping up their vacationers. Days before the annual Regatta celebration, the townspeople are faced with financial ruin if something isn't done about their newfound shark problem. If that wasn't enough, the owners of the local amusement park have been subject to a hostile takeover from a prospective businessman looking to cash in on their prized property. The film centers on the family of a scientist named Albert Dooley (Dean Jones) who struggles to pay the bills. His wife, Katie (Sandy Duncan) gets a recipe for applesauce wrong and gives it to her husband to take to work for lunch, hoping it will help cut down on the budget. In a humorous chain reaction, the duck Albert is testing steals the applesauce after Albert has thrown it away in the trash, and then wanders into a radiation lab and becomes irradiated. Albert is ordered to get rid of the duck, so he figures he can give it to his son, Jimmy (Lee Montgomery) who has been wanting a pet, only to discover it now lays eggs with solid gold yolks.

When the Blue Raiders are called into Union service at the start of the American Civil War, their mascot drummer boy, John Clem defies his father’s wishes and smuggles himself on the train carrying the troops to camp. In spite of efforts by the troops to force him to give up and go home, Johnny refuses and tries to tough it out. He gets photographed by Matthew Brady. His father comes to get him, but Johnny runs away and returns to the regiment. He finally wears down Capt. McPherson, who agrees to let him join the regiment officially. At the Battle of Shiloh, Johnny and General George Henry Thomas rally the retreating Federal forces, but his friend Jeremiah Sullivan is killed. At the Battle of Chickamauga, Johnny wounds a Confederate Colonel who was attacking his friend Gabe Trotter. After the battle, General Ulysses S. Grant promotes Gabe to a lieutenant and Johnny is promoted to sergeant. Johnny and Gabe deliver an important message to General James B. Steedman, but on the way back to Thomas’s headquarters, Gabe is wounded and Johnny is captured. Even though questioned by General Joseph Wheeler he refuses to talk. He makes a daring escape and returns to the union lines.
