Amélie, a young Belgian woman (played by Sylvie Testud), having spent her childhood in Japan, decides to return to live there and tries to integrate into Japanese society. She is determined to be a "real Japanese" before her year contract runs out, though it is precisely this determination that is incompatible with Japanese humility. Though she is hired for a choice position as a translator at an import/export firm, her inability to understand Japanese cultural norms results in increasingly humiliating demotions. Though Amelie secretly adulates her immediate supervisor, Ms Mori (Kaori Tsuji), the latter takes sadistic pleasure in belittling Amelie. Mori finally manages to break Amelie's will by making her the bathroom attendant, and is delighted when Amelie tells her that she will not renew her contract. Amelie realizes that she is finally a real Japanese when she enters the company president's office "with fear and trembling," which was possible only because her determination had been broken by Mori's systematic humiliation.

The film begins with Cassius Clay, Jr. (Will Smith) before his championship debut against then heavyweight champion Sonny Liston. In the pre-fight weigh-in Clay heavily taunts Liston (such as calling Liston a "big ugly bear"). In the fight Clay is able to dominate the early rounds of the match, but halfway through the fight Clay complains of a burning feeling in his eyes (implying that Liston has tried to cheat) and says he is unable to continue. However, his trainer/manager Angelo Dundee (Ron Silver) gets him to keep fighting. Once Clay is able to see again he easily dominates the fight and right before round seven Liston quits, therefore making Cassius Clay the second youngest heavyweight champion at the time after Floyd Patterson. Clay spends valued time with Malcolm X (Peebles) and the two decide to take a trip to Africa.

Antoine, noctambule trentenaire, écume les bars et boîtes de nuit de Paris, entrant grâce à son bagou dans les lieux les plus prisés de la capitale. Avec l'aide de son ami Étienne, dans sa quête de Jordan, Antoine commence à recueillir des indices et finit par rencontrer la sœur de celui-ci, l'envoûtante Violaine, avec qui il termine la soirée. Mais c'est le début des ennuis pour Antoine qui est drogué par Violaine et se retrouve errant en sang dans Paris au petit matin, comme victime d'une attaque de vampire. Il est de plus mis sous pression par von Bülow qui, sous la menace, l'oblige à des résultats rapides ; il doit prendre de plus en plus de risques, plongeant dans les milieux les plus glauques du Paris nocturne, dans son enquête concernant ce couple mystérieux.
