The Fox Film Corporation was an American company that produced motion pictures, formed by William Fox on 1 February 1915. It was the corporate successor to his earlier Greater New York Film Rental Company and Box Office Attractions Film Company.

The company's first film studios were set up in Fort Lee, New Jersey but in 1917, William Fox sent Sol M. Wurtzel to Hollywood, California to oversee the studio's new West Coast production facilities where a more hospitable and cost effective climate existed for filmmaking. On July 23, 1926, the company bought the patents of the Movietone sound system for recording sound on to film.

After the Crash of 1929, William Fox lost control of the company in 1930, during a hostile takeover. Under new president Sidney Kent, the new owners merged the company with Twentieth Century Pictures to form 20th Century Fox in 1935.

Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis is largely an avant-garde film, and does not have a story or a plot. However, the events of the film are arranged to simulate the passage of a single day (simulated from an assemblage of film shot over the period of one year). Shots and scenes are cut together based on relationships of image, motion, point of view, and thematic content. At times, a sort of non-narrative commentary can be implied, as in edits that juxtapose workers entering a factory with cattle being beaten and driven into a corral.

Un jeune homme, Eric Brasingham, rêve d'être un acteur mondialement reconnu. Passionné de William Shakespeare, il décide d'aller jouer Hamlet à Londres. C'est alors qu'il fait la connaissance d'une ravissante femme spécialiste du lancer de couteaux, Gertie Ryan, qui tombe amoureuse de lui. Mais Eric, obsédé par sa probable réussite, ne voit pas l'amour qu'elle lui porte. Elle est également convoitée par Juan, son collègue également lanceur de couteaux. Lorsqu'il part pour Londres, Gertie n'a plus de nouvelles d'Eric, qui accède enfin au succès grâce à la pièce de Shakespeare. Lorsqu'Eric rentre à New York, il découvre que Juan et Gertie, toujours amoureuse de lui secrètement, vont se marier. Il est surpris avec la mariée par Juan qui le frappe et le vire de la cérémonie. Eric, dont le narcissisme a gâché l'histoire d'amour avec Gertie, finit seul.
