In 2006, eighteen-year-old Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a former street child (child Ayush Mahesh Khedekar, adolescent Tanay Chheda) from the Juhu slum, is a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (see Kaun Banega Crorepati), and is one question away from the grand prize. However, before the ₹20 million (US$300 000) question, he is detained and tortured by the police, who suspect him of cheating because of the impossibility of a simple "slumdog" with very little education knowing all the answers. Jamal recounts, through flashbacks, the incidents in his life which provided him with each answer. These flashbacks tell the story of Jamal, his brother Salim (adult Madhur Mittal, adolescent Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala, child Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail), and Latika (adult Freida Pinto, adolescent Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar, child Rubina Ali). In each flashback Jamal has a point to remember one person, or song, or different things that lead to the right answer of one of the questions. The row of questions does not correspond chronologically to Jamal's life, so the story switches between different periods (childhood, adolescence) of Jamal. Some questions do not refer to points of his life (cricket champion), but by witness he comes to the right answer.

Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman), a young dancer in a prestigious New York City ballet company, lives with her mother, Erica (Barbara Hershey), a former dancer herself. The company is preparing to open the season with Swan Lake. The director, Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel), has to cast a new principal dancer after forcing Beth Macintyre (Winona Ryder) into retirement. Thomas wants the same ballerina to portray the innocent, fragile White Swan as well as her dark, sensual twin, the Black Swan. Nina auditions for the part, performing flawlessly as the White Swan, but not quite able to emulate the characteristics of the Black Swan. Although Nina does not do well during her audition, she approaches Thomas and asks him to reconsider her as the lead role. He tells her she is the ideal dancer to cast as the White Swan, but she lacks the passion needed to correctly portray the Black Swan.

The once-successful steel mills of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, have shut down and most of the employees have been laid off. Sixteen-year-old Minnesota high-schooler Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) discovers she is pregnant with a child fathered by her friend and longtime admirer, Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). She initially considers an abortion. Going to a local clinic run by a women's group, she encounters outside a schoolmate who is holding a rather pathetic one-person pro-life vigil. Once inside, however, Juno is alienated by the clinic staff's authoritarian and bureaucratic attitudes. She is particularly offended by their calling her "sexually active", a term which she feels demeans the highly emotional event by which she became pregnant. All of this decides her against abortion, and she decides to give the baby up for adoption. With the help of her friend Leah (Olivia Thirlby), Juno searches the ads in the Pennysaver and finds a couple she feels will provide a suitable home. She tells her parents, Mac (J.K. Simmons) and stepmother, Bren (Allison Janney), who offer their support. With Mac, Juno meets the couple, Mark and Vanessa Loring (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner), in their expensive home and agrees to a closed adoption.

En 1965, l'analyste Daniel Ellsberg se rend sur le front de la guerre du Viêt Nam pour y observer l'avancement des troupes américaines, pour le compte du secrétaire à la Défense, Robert McNamara. En 1971, Daniel Ellsberg travaille désormais pour RAND Corporation. Il décide de photocopier secrètement des rapports sur le progrès du conflit au Viêt Nam, depuis la présidence de Harry S. Truman à 1967, révélant le double discours des différentes administrations américaines sur les chances de victoire des États-Unis au Vietnam. Les gouvernements successifs ont ainsi caché au peuple américain la réalité de l'enlisement du conflit. Daniel Ellsberg divulgue alors des informations au New York Times. Le journal est cependant mis en garde par la justice, sous la pression du président Richard Nixon, sur les conséquences de la publication d'informations nationales classées secrètes. D'abord sur la touche, le Washington Post va récupérer le scoop grâce à la motivation de son rédacteur en chef, Benjamin Bradlee. Ce dernier va inciter la directrice du journal, Katharine Graham, à publier les fameux Pentagon Papers. Mais cette dernière doit aussi faire face à son conseil d'administration et à la future entrée en bourse de son journal. Le film s'achève sur l'arrêt de la Cour Suprême New York Times Co. v. United States, dans lequel les équipes du Washington Post s'alignent avec celles du New York Times parmi les parties convoquées, ce qui ouvre la voie sur la scène finale, montrant le Watergate de nuit, théâtre du scandale du Watergate, démarré en 1972 et qui mettra fin à la présidence Nixon en 1974.
