Shaw Brothers (HK) Ltd. (Chinese: 邵氏兄弟(香港)有限公司) was the largest film production company of Hong Kong.
In 1925, the three Shaw brothers—Runje, Runme, and Runde—founded Tianyi Film Company (also called Unique) in Shanghai, then established a film distribution base in Singapore where Runme and the youngest brother Run Run Shaw managed the precursor to the parent company Shaw Organization. Shaw Brothers took over the film production business of its Hong Kong-based sister company, Shaw & Sons Ltd., in 1958.
Over the years Shaw Brothers produced some 1,000 films, before film production was suspended in 1987 to concentrate on the television industry, through its subsidiary TVB. Film production resumed in 2009.
In 2011 Shaw Brothers was reorganized into the Clear Water Bay Land Company Limited, its film production business being taken over by other companies within the Shaw conglomerate.
At the end of the Qing Dynasty due to poverty and starvation, Ma Wing Jing (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and his older brother Ma Tai Cheung (Yuen Wah) flee from their harsh homeland to the big city of Shanghai to make their fortune. Once they arrive in Shanghai reality sets in and both are only able to secure jobs as coolies (bitter hard manual labor) making chump change. Wing Jing admires the local triad gangster boss Tam Sei's (Yuen Biao) life style. Tam Sei seeing Ma Wing Jing admire his horse carriage challenges Wing Jing to a human versus horse race. Wing Jing accepts his challenge, after seeing Wing Jing's determination, loyalty, fighting skills and athleticism the two strike up a friendship and Tam Sei tells Wing Jing to visit his night club one day if he ever needs help.

Le film retrace l'histoire de l'Académie d'étude du théâtre chinois (中国戏剧研究学院, en anglais Peking Opera School), l'école hongkongaise dirigée par Maître Yu (joué par Sammo Hung, qui a été son élève à partir de 1959). Son enseignement était renommé pour être dur, et les coups de bâtons y étaient fréquents.
Le film raconte l'histoire de deux orphelins dont les parents ont été tués par le même assassin, l'un est envoyé à l'école de shaolin du nord et l'autre à celle du sud. Une fois la date de l'anniversaire du meurtrier arrivée, ils essaient de se venger.
Teen-aged Fong Sai-Yuk is a gifted Martial Artist but he is a poor student at school and is a constant troublemaker, despite the fact that the school is run by his father. Powerful Manchu officials in Guangdong are achieving hegemony over the native Han Chinese population and threaten to shut the school down.
Many years ago, Inspector Kam Chi-kin (Bryan Leung) killed an innocent man and decided to resign from the police force. He then became a professional killer, paid by Uncle Hung (Che Hung), and disguises as a pet store owner in order to earn money to raise his son. His best friend, Bobby Chow Fuk-cheung (Fei Xiang) recently returned from UK and works under Superintendent Lau Cheuk-aang (Paul Chu). Chow has been investigating recent murder cases that were done by Kam. Later, as one of his colleague Sam (Kirk Wong) is murdered, Chow discovered the mastermind behind these cases were actually Superintendent Lau. Lau then murders one of his subordinate Man (Cheung Ming-man), mistaken him to have discovered his identity. Later, Uncle Hung takes Kam's son hostage and orders him to kill Chow. Kam later disguises Chow's murder and they both confront Lau, Hung, the gang and two police officers Wai (Chan Chik-wai) and Chicken Blood.
Mad Wai (Bryan Leung) is a former triad member who has retired from the underworld to raise his daughter after his wife died. When rival triad Jiaxi Lan (Wong Chun), who led a gang in Chinatown, Manhattan, decides to take over territories in East Tsim Sha Tsui belonging to Wai's former boss Han (Shih Kien), Lan manipulates Han's cowardly underling Rotten Chi (Shum Wai) to betray and kill his boss. Upon hearing the death, Wai vows to seek vengeance for Han. At this time, Lan also kidnaps Wai's daughter. Wai, alongside his old friends Playboy Lung (Norman Chu) and Sergeant Lam (Richard Cheung), engage in a bloody battle against Lan to avenge their former boss and save Wai's beloved daughter.
The film is set in 1940s Shanghai and Hong Kong. Bai Liu-Su (Cora Miao) is an introverted divorcée who has her fair share of misery after breaking up with her good-for-nothing husband. Her large, extended family feels she has shamed them through divorce. Her situation at home has become unbearable. A charming Malayan businessman based in Hong Kong, Fan Liu-yuan (Chow Yun-Fat), who is always surrounded by women, happens to visit Shanghai and becomes interested in Bai after chancing on her through mutual friends. Fan sees in Bai what many others don't and tries his best to make her fall in love again. A middle-aged couple tries to match make the two. Bai takes a gamble and decides to visit Hong Kong with the Japanese invasion of China looming, willing to risk all just to get out of her awkward family situation, even though she fell for Fan, future was uncertain. It is only through surviving war-torn Hong Kong as civilians that the two realize that they truly love each other.
The film is a spin-off of the original story of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber. Zhang Wuji retrieves the Heaven-reliant Sword and the Dragon-slaying Saber and places them in the Ming Cult's headquarters. He carves the inscriptions from the Nine Yang Manual on the walls of a secret chamber and asks his godfather Xie Xun, who has become a monk, to help him guard the chamber. Zhang returns the original copy of the manual to the Shaolin Sect.

With help from the treacherous Song dynasty general Pun Mei, the Khitan-ruled Liao dynasty army succeeded in trapping the loyal Song general Yeung Yip and his 7 sons at Golden Beach. Yeung Yip and his sons were all killed or captured in the ambush, except for the 5th son and the 6th son who managed to escape. The 6th son returned home, but was severely traumatised by the events. Meanwhile, the 5th son sought refuge in a monastery in Mount Wutai, but the monastery leaders initially did not consider him calm enough to be a Buddhist monk. As blades were not allowed inside a monastery, he used his martial arts training in spears to practice with a pole, eventually developing the unique eight diagram pole fighting technique. When he finally appeared to have put his anger and past behind him, news broke that the Khitans had captured his younger sister, Yeung Baat-mui, who was looking for him. Now he must break Buddhist vows (including not kill and not be bothered by worldly affairs) to save Baat-mui and exact his revenge.
Captain Zhao Wu Yi is the leader of the Brocade Guards, the government's secret police. The sergeant of the force is Zhao's elder son, Zhao Bu Fa. Zhao also has a younger son in the force, Zhao Bu Qun, whom he executes after he questions him about whether or not he would kill his father if he committed a crime, which he answers "No".
