Wunderbar Films is an Indian film production studio established by actor Dhanush, director Aishwarya R. Dhanush and music composer Anirudh Ravichander . Formed in 2010, it has since gone on to produce several Tamil language films. Wunderbar means wonderful in German. The actor and music composer duo coined their production company name as Wunderbar after being amused by the word, from seeing the film Inglourious Basterds.

In a tiny concrete-and-tin Chennai home in the slums live two young brothers with their mother and grandmother. With the boys' father in prison for unknown reasons and with an ageing mother-in-law, the mother does her best to keep the kitchen fires burning. The brothers spend their time playing games and stealing and devouring eggs from crows' nests. Their love for these eggs leads them to start calling themselves Crow's Egg the Elder and Crow's Egg the Younger.

Daanish (Dhanush), born mute in rural Igatpuri, loves films. He acts out scenes before his class, amazing his peers and teacher, and spends all his time in the local Paradise theatre. When he grows up, Daanish brings pakodas to the local video-store owner and watches films every day. The movie starts off with a Constable talking to the new subinspector Arjun about Maari, a local rowdy, who apparently rose to fame after killing a rival rowdy. Maari (Dhanush) happens to be an irritating guy, who along with his henchmen Sanikilamai (Robo Shankar) and Adithangi (Kalloori Vinoth), constantly pester the people in the locality and extort them. His main line of work is in training pigeons to perform in races and performance events. His boss is Velu, a bigger don who also is involved in the pigeon races as well as smuggling of sandalwood. Maari constantly has fights with "Bird" Ravi (Mime Gopi), another local rowdy who is also working under Velu. That is when Sridevi (Kajal Agarwal) enters, trying to open a boutique in Maari's locality. Maari forcefully becomes her partner in the business, which angers her after she loses some customers. So she helps Arjun in catching Maari by getting close to him, pretending to fall in love with him and incriminating him with an evidence of his confession of trying to kill the rival gang leader, but failing after which he was killed by someone else and the fame comes to Maari. Maari gets arrested and after he is released, he finds out that Velu also has been arrested, Arjun and Ravi are working together and has arrested some people in the area under the pretext of smuggling. Maari decides to take revenge on the duo. He first frees the local people from the extortion by Ravi's gang, when Sridevi also falls in love with him. Later he captures one of Arjun's smuggling vehicles and the driver and forces him to release Velu. When he takes revenge by burning the pigeon coop of Maari, he gets angry and beats up Ravi and Arjun, with the former agreeing to confess to everything. Angered, Arjun stabs Ravi but eventually gets arrested by the Revenue Department after his constable reveals all the secrets. Finally Sridevi approaches Maari to confess her love, which he rejects, returning to pester the local people and extort them for cash.

Raghuvaran is a graduate in Civil Engineering, but has been unemployed for four years. He is adamant about working in a job related to his field only and is unwilling to accept any other profession. He often comes into conflict with his father, who considers him irresponsible. His younger brother, Karthik, works in an IT company, earning well and, evidently, his father's approval. Raghuvaran's mother, Bhuvana, however, supports him. Raghuvaran falls for his neighbour's daughter, Shalini who hates him initially, but warms up to him after hearing about the difficulties he is facing and eventually reciprocates his love.

The film begins in a fantasy sequence taking place in Madhumitha's (Amyra Dastur) imagination as she shares the story with her psychiatrist, Dr. Radhika (Lena): Munaruna (Dhanush) is a Tamil worker in Burma. His friend Saamuda (Jagan) falls in love with Mallika (Aishwarya Devan), but Mallika loves Munaruna instead. Munaruna saves Samudra (Amyra Dastur), the daughter of a Burmese army general, from a Ferris wheel accident and they fall in love. When Mallika learns about this, she is devastated and marries Saamuda. The Burmese general disapproves of the union between Munaruna and Samudra, and revokes the privileges that the Tamil immigrants had until then. Violence breaks out and the Tamil nationals flee Burma. Munaruna and Samudra also join the refugees on on a ship along with Saamuda and Mallika. When Samudra's father comes looking for her, Mallika spitefully reveals where they are hiding. As Samudra and Munaruna try to escape by diving into the ocean, Munaruna is shot and killed. Samudra drowns after promising to be together forever.
