Synopsis
Jude Keffy-Horn (Asa Butterfield) is a teenage boy who lives in Vermont with his adoptive mother, Harriet (Julianne Nicholson), and sister, Prudence (Nadia Alexander). Mixed up in the complicated world of drugs and alcohol, his best friend, Teddy (Avan Jogia), dies of a drug overdose on the last day of 1987 after Teddy, Jude and their new friend, Eliza (Hailee Steinfeld) from Manhattan spend the night out partying, leaving Jude devastated. Jude is eventually sent to Manhattan to reconnect with his father, Les (Ethan Hawke), and discovers kinship with Teddy's half-brother, Johnny (Emile Hirsch). He soon starts hanging out with Johnny's group of straight-edge friends, that have strict no-drugs, no-sex, no-meat, and no-alcohol rules, keeping Jude out of trouble for the first time in years. When he finds out that Eliza, who is also the daughter of Les' girlfriend, Di (Emily Mortimer), is pregnant with the child of deceased Teddy after an encounter on the night Teddy died, he and Johnny, along with Les, become Eliza's rock as she struggles through pregnancy so early on in life, and the three become a family of sorts, in hopes to raise the child together. Meanwhile, Di struggles with her relationship with Les, and Harriet struggles with the prospect of her growing children.Actors

In 1998, Erik (Thure Lindhardt), a Danish artist living in New York, meets Paul (Zachary Booth), a lawyer, through a phone sex hotline. Clearly attracted to each other, they share an intimate moment and have sex. Erik later visits a man named Russ (Sebastian La Cause) who seems more interested in showing off his muscles to Erik than having sex. Erik sees Paul again, and tells him about how he broke up with his ex-boyfriend Paolo, who was HIV-positive. Erik confides to his friend Claire (Julianne Nicholson) on how he is happier now with Paul than he was with Paolo. Meanwhile, Paul asks Erik to keep quiet about his drug use and gets Erik high. Paul, who was closeted before meeting Erik, sees his ex-girlfriend while visiting an art gallery with Erik, who tries to persuade Paul to introduce him to her. While away from the city, Erik calls his doctor for some test results and learns that he is HIV-negative. Later, Paul throws a surprise birthday party for Erik.

In 1971, a policeman catches Elmo McElroy, a recent college graduate with a degree in pharmacology, smoking marijuana. Because of his arrest and conviction, he is unable to find work as a pharmacologist. In the present day, a drug lord called "the Lizard" calls a meeting of his organisation, hoping to sell a brand new substance invented by Elmo. The meeting goes badly when Elmo, in a bid to escape from the Lizard's control, blows up the building, killing everyone but the Lizard. Vengeful, the Lizard contacts Dakota, a contract killer, who previously killed the only witness in a case against the Lizard. Dakota initially refuses the hit, but accepts when the Lizard offers to clear her gambling debts and give her a $250,000 bonus.

The film follows a day in the life of Los Angeles Police Department officer, Jake Hoyt, who is scheduled to be evaluated by Detective Alonzo Harris, a highly decorated LAPD narcotics officer.
