35 Shots of Rum (French: 35 Rhums) is a 2008 film, directed by Claire Denis, the French filmmaker. It made its North American premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, and was shown outside of competition at the Venice Film Festival. It was later released to limited theaters in 2009. Claire Denis was in part inspired by Yasujirō Ozu's Late Spring.
Synopsis
Lionel (Alex Descas), a widower who drives RER trains in metropolitan Paris, has raised his daughter Josephine (Mati Diop) alone for many years. They have always shared a special bond and live a secure and contented life somewhat isolated from others, in an apartment building in a suburb of Paris. Josephine, an anthropology student, is now grown and become a young woman, but she remains deeply devoted to her father.Actors

Two young men, Dah (Isaach De Bankolé) from Benin and Jocelyn (Alex Descas) from the Caribbean decide to work together as a team that organizes illegal cockfights in order to gain quick cash. Martine, une adolescente vivant en HLM près d'une base militaire américaine dans la grande banlieue parisienne en 1965 ne pense qu'à une chose : perdre sa virginité. Marco (Vincent Lindon), a sailor who has cut off ties with most of his family, returns home after the suicide of his brother-in-law. At the urging of his sister Sandra (Julie Bataille), who believes that her husband’s death was caused by one of their creditors, Marco tries to avenge his family. The film begins with the silhouettes of soldiers, being made to stand in the sun as an endurance test. It is the memory of master sergeant Galoup (Denis Lavant), from his new home in Marseille, where he writes his memoirs. He remembers the heat of north Africa, where he led his men under the command of Bruno Forestier (Michel Subor). We see numerous training scenes: assault courses; and securing of buildings. Much of the exercise has a ballet-like quality. This is set against a back-drop of traditional Djibouti life of the surrounding local people. Galoup says of Forestier:I admired him without knowing why. He retains a wristband with the word Bruno.
