Michel Gerfaut is a handsome middle-aged man who lives in Paris, France. He has a beautiful girlfriend and works as a professional poker player. One night, as he is returning from yet another card game, he comes across a car accident. Noticing that the driver of the crashed car is still alive, he brings him to the hospital. On the following day, Gerfaut learns from the newspaper that the man died and that he, actually was shot. On top of that, he has been known as a public figure involved in dirty deals with weapons. Gradually, Gerfaut realizes that he has become a target for assassins who eliminate any possible witnesses.

Jean-Paul, a writer and Marianne, his girlfriend of just over two years, are holidaying at a friend's villa. There is a tension in their relationship which excites Marianne: the film begins with a scene in which they are together beside the villa's swimming pool and she urges him to claw her back. He does as she asks, but then throws her into the pool and jumps in after her. In a later scene he takes a branch and uses it to lash her bare buttocks, playfully but with a force that increases as the scene cuts away.

Roch Siffredi, chef de gang très en vue à Marseille, vient d'ouvrir un établissement somptueux qui lui promettrait des jours heureux dans cette ville, s'il ne venait d'enterrer son ami et associé François Capella à la fin du premier Borsalino. Il jure de le venger. Il apprend qu'un certain Giovanni Volpone, récemment arrivé à Marseille, est à l'origine du meurtre. Le commissaire Fanti passe voir Siffredi après la mort de Capella. Il constate la réussite du truand et admire le nouvel établissement : il a une certaine estime pour Roch, mais quand des évènements agitent le milieu, sa politique est de laisser les truands s'entretuer ! Il informe cependant Siffredi que Volpone est un homme dangereux : le gangster italien, semble avoir des ambitions sur la ville de Marseille; il a des moyens importants tant en hommes qu'en finance et des soutiens politiques efficaces dans la période qui précède la guerre. Volpone est en relation avec le fascisme international. Il a le projet de « nettoyer » la ville et d'en faire une base expérimentale pour préparer une ère nouvelle.

William Foster is recently divorced, and his ex-wife Beth has a restraining order to keep him away from her and their child, Adele. In addition, he was recently laid off from his job due to the early 90s recession. His frustration grows when his car air conditioning fails while he is stuck in traffic. He abandons his car and walks across Los Angeles to attend Adele's birthday party. At a convenience store, Foster becomes frustrated when the Korean owner refuses to give him change for a phone call. Foster disarms the owner and uses his bat to destroy merchandise before paying for a coke and leaving. Shortly thereafter, two gang members accost him with a knife. Recently divorced Meg Altman (Foster) and her 11-year-old daughter Sarah (Stewart) have just purchased a four-story brownstone on the Upper West Side of New York City. The "panic room" is protected by concrete and steel on all sides, a thick steel door, and an extensive security system with multiple surveillance cameras, a public announcement system, and a separate phone line. Stu Shepard (Colin Farrell) is an arrogant New York City publicist who has been courting a woman named Pam (Katie Holmes) behind his wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell). He uses the last remaining public phone booth in the city to contact Pam. During the call, he is interrupted by a pizza delivery man, who attempts to deliver a free pizza to him, but Stu rudely turns him away by insulting his weight. He also says he will call Kelly, leaving Stu panicked.
