The Village Sleuth is a 1920 American silent comedy film directed by Jerome Storm and written by Agnes Christine Johnston. The film stars Charles Ray, Winifred Westover, Dick Rush, Donald MacDonald, George Hernandez, and Betty Schade. The film was released on September 12, 1920, by Paramount Pictures. A copy of the film is in the Gosfilmofond film archive.

Synopsis

From a newspaper ad for the film: "As a country boy, with aspirations to become a great detective, Charles Ray is said to afford considerable laughter and a few thrills in "A Village Sleuth" . . . After his attempts to round up some melon thieves in his dad's apple orchard, have gotten him into hot water, Charlie goes out and gets a real job in a private sanitarium. There he encounters a real mystery and, his detective instincts aroused starts to unravel it. The results are surprising in the extreme. Charlie is revealed not only as the logical successor to Sherlock Holmes but wins a pretty girl in the bargain. "A Village Sleuth" was written by Agnes Christine Johnston, scenarist of "Twenty-three and a Half Hours Leave," and produced for Paramount release by Thomas H. Ince. Winifred Westover is the leading woman. Jerome Storm directed.

Jim Kelly (Charles Ray) works for a railroad express company in a small Midwest town. After years of heavy lifting, he has developed quite a punch. He is infatuated with Kitty Haskell (Colleen Moore), the daughter of his boss (J.P. Lockner), whom he has worked with for years. Jim has a rival for Kitty's attentions, a city boy who one day watches Mr. Haskell deposit money in the railroad safe. He memorized the combination and later steals the deposit from the safe. Suspicion for the theft falls on both Mr. Haskell and Jim, and Jim decides to go on the run, thinking that Mr. Haskell is guilty and hoping to divert attention from him. He goes to the city, develops his boxing skills, moves to the top of the roster and on the night of the big fight he refuses to throw the bout. He discovers his rival with some of the missing cash, and turns him in... freeing Mr. Haskell and winning the love of Kitty.

Avice, daughter of a decadent rich family, realizes that her mother has put her on the marriage market and resigns herself to her fate. So she marries Masters, a rich westerner, still believing herself in love with Dr. Van Fleet, one of society's lounge lizards. He is a member of the party which Masters invites to his ranch house after the wedding. One night he breaks into Avice's room but much to his surprise she repulses him. He is roundly beaten up by Masters, is driven off the ranch and takes refuge with a Mexican. After the departure of the rest of the guests, Masters sets himself to the task of crushing the proud spirit of Avice but with little success. His best friend, Keno Clark and Avice's brother, thinking to assist in the happy ending, try to arouse Avice's jealousy by hinting of another woman in the life of Masters. This however, fails to have the desired effect, for Avice announces her intention of returning East and never setting eyes on her husband again. Van Fleet, the villain, in revenge, shoots Masters, wounding him severely and then Avice awakens to her real state of mind. At the point of a gun she forces the doctor to dress her husband's wound and when he recovers there is complete happiness.

Comme rapporté dans le Exhibitor Herald, Bill Henry Jenkins (Ray) quitte la ferme familiale et parcourt le pays à vélo à la recherche de la fortune. Il est agressé par un paysan furieux et se réfugie dans l'hôtel d'un bourg géré par son oncle, où celui-ci lui donne un statut d'employé. Lela Mason (Roberts) arrive à l'hôtel, après avoir dépensé son dernier sou pour parvenir jusque-là. Elle a en fait hérité d'un petit terrain de ferme dont l'avoué local lui a dit qu'il était sans valeur, ce qui soulève la compassion de Bill Henry. Celui-ci joue au poker avec les clients de passage afin de gagner suffisamment d'argent pour acheter la propriété, laissant Lela dans l'ignorance de l'identité de l'acheteur. Un promoteur offre à Bill Henry un prix beaucoup plus élevé pour le terrain et Bill le vend, en disant à l'avoué de transférer l'argent à Lela. Au lieu de cela, l'homme de loi empoche l'argent et accuse Bill Henry de tromper sciemment la jeune femme. Son oncle le dénonce, mais Lela lui reste fidèle. Bill Henry revient, tabasse l'avocat, et lui fait avouer sa tromperie, puis il épouse la jeune femme.
