Winifred Westover (November 9, 1899 – March 19, 1978) was a Hollywood actress of the 1910s and 1920s.

Biography

Winifred Westover was born in San Francisco, California. On screen, Westover was the typical blushing ingenue and was almost always cast opposite robust leading men.

Her career in film started with a small part in D. W. Griffith's Intolerance in 1916. In 1919 she starred in John Petticoats with William S. Hart, who proposed to her. They married on 7 December 1921 and had a son, William S. Hart Jr. They separated in 1922 after three months of marriage and divorced in 1927.

She retired to raise her son in 1923 but made a comeback in 1930 with the help of her ex-husband. The film was a melodrama called Lummox but it was unsuccessful and she left her career in film. She appeared in a few television episodes during 1969. She died in Los Angeles.

Based upon a summary of the plot in a review in a film publication, Angie (Dunn) and Abe (Harmon) have been married for many years when bad investments force them to sell their homestead. Angie is to go to the old ladies' home while Abe is to go to live on the poor farm. When the twenty-nine inmates of the old ladies' home see how hard it is for the couple to part, they agree to take Abe in, and he is listed on their roster as "Old Lady 31." There are several comic situations as Abe wins his way into the hearts of his female companions. When some apparently worthless mining stock is found to have some value, the couple are able to return to their home.

As summarized in a magazine, Fatty (Arbuckle) meets Winnie (Westover) after rescuing her father Frank (St. John) from a well at their farm and is smitten with her. Fatty is dismissed and leaves, however, as Frank wants Winnie to marry Al Clove (St. John). Fatty returns to the farm in the disguise of a hired girl so that he can be near his beloved, but finds he must fend off the flirtations of her father Frank. Winnie's marriage is all arranged, but at the dress rehearsal the groom is missing, so the "hired girl" takes his place and goes through the practice ceremony, word for word, with the bride. When the wedding day arrives, the ceremony is broken up when Fatty and Winnie announce that they have already been married as the rehearsal was the real thing.

Engineer Jim Bludso and his sidekick, Banty Tim, return to Gilgal, Illinois after the end of the American Civil War. Upon arrival, they discover that Jim's wife, Gabrielle, has left him for another man and abandoned their son. Kate Taggart, the daughter of a storekeeper in town, takes pity on Jim and they develop a fondness for one another. Gabrielle, now dumped, returns and Jim forgives her and resumes their married life. Meanwhile, a flood is coming, and Ben Merrill—constructor of Gilgal's levee—knows the structure won't hold against the tide, so he willfully causes it to fail and plans to blame the resulting catastrophe on Jim and Banty Tim. Gabrielle is mortally wounded in the flood, and her dying words implicate Merrill and identify him as the man who wooed her away from her family. Jim is on board the boat Prairie Bell when this news reaches him, as is Merrill; they get into a fight, and Prairie Bell bursts into flames and explodes. Jim is rescued and returns to Gilgal to marry Kate.
