Synopsis
The film is set over the course of a New Year's Eve night in the Croatian port city of Split, where it follows three parallel plots. The first plot line features a small-time drug dealer Nike (Mladen Vulić) and a young widow Marija (Nives Ivanković); the second plot line deals with a drug addict called Maja (Marija Škaričić) who decides to have sex with an US Navy sailor called Franky (Coolio) in exchange for some heroin; the third one shows a young couple, Luka and Anđela (Vicko Bilandžić and Ivana Roščić) who spend the night desperately looking for a place to celebrate the New Year by having their first sexual experience. The plots are connected through a drug dealer Crni (Marinko Prga), through Dino Dvornik's concert, where all of them pass through at some point, and through the omnipresent fireworks that dot the night sky over the course of the film.Actors

In 1977, fifteen years before the Bosnian War ravaged their lives, Halima’s (Alma Prica) niece Safija (Olga Pakalović) became pregnant by Slavomir (Mijo Jurišić), a Serb man. Beaten and ostracized by her Bosniak family, Safija gave the infant boy to the childless Halima to raise, telling Slavomir it was stillborn. Twenty-three years later, the devastating war has ended. Bodies are being identified through DNA samples and returned to families for burial. Halima’s husband is found, but the boy cannot be returned to her without a blood sample. And that would have to come from Safija who ran away years ago and married Slavomir. When Halima finally locates her, Safija refuses the blood test because she is afraid her husband will discover her deception. And other deceptions could be uncovered as well, including the shocking identity of the soldier who took Halima’s husband and the boy to their deaths.

Mare and Janko are a young married couple and both are working. They have a son, Bruno, who is 7 years old. With materialistic aspirations they have acquired an upscale flat in Zagreb on loan basis. Suddenly, just before Christmas, Mare loses her secretarial job. She becomes restless. As she returns home, after a dinner party her husband does not sympathize with her plight but tries to force himself on her for his carnal pleasures. When Mare resists, Janko is furious and beats her up; the scene is set in a silhouetted night sequence with christmas lights visible at the window. Mare unable to bear the marital torture leaves her husband and goes out of the house with her son in midnight. She seeks shelter with her friend who is not very sympathetic with the step taken by her friend. But her friend's husband is not sympathetic to Milan and asks her to leave the house. She then starts living in her car. She spends the day wandering in the street of Zagreb telling her young son that they are on an "adventure". On Christmas night, Milan, a security guard at a store who is single and quite unimpressive, sees Mare and her son living a crammed space in the car. As a good samaritan, he offers them shelter in the store which he is guarding.
