Three young bachelors Pandiyan (Pandiyan), Anand (Anand Babu) and Babu (Babu) are friends and room-mates in an apartment. The three bachelors swear that they are not her father. Since then, their lives are completely changed. First, they try to abandon the baby but then they take care of the baby and name her Thayamma. Rajamanickam (R. Sarathkumar) is the village chief and he is respected among the villagers. He has two daughters : Gowri and Vaidehi (Uthra). Gowri is married to a rich drunkard who beats her while Vaidehi is a college student. Later, Kalyanam (Ramarjun) and Vaidehi fall in love with each other. Kalyanam is the son of Rajamanickam's servant Chinnasamy (Delhi Ganesh). In the meantime, the doctor Krishnamoorthy (Ilavarasan) comes to Rajamanickam's village and Rajamanickam loans him a clinic. The school teacher Vasanthi (Rekha) has a boy but has no husband, they live near Kalyanam's house. Vasanthi advices Kalyanam to not elope with Vaidehi but to marry her with Rajamanickam's blessing.

The story begins with the minister Deivanayagam (R. P. Viswam) and his son who debated. Deivanayagam's son came with his wife Malathi (Rekha) and new-born daughter Devi, he believed that his father changed. On the other hand, Deivanayagam wanted his son back, leaving his wife and daughter but his son refused. Meanwhile, Deivanayagam's assistant Arumugam (K. Rajpreeth) killed Deivanayagam in front of his son and Arumugam put the blame on him. Deivanayagam's son was arrested and then the new-born daughter was handed over to a beggar by Arumugam.

Sethu (Kamal Haasan) and Ranjani (Rekha) arrive at a cliff where they plan to commit suicide due to the pressure put up by Ranjani's parents against their marriage. Sethu who is the son of an ordinary drunkard cook (Delhi Ganesh) and is also a dancer is not accepted as groom for Ranjani by her parents. The parents threaten Ranjani that either they would kill Sethu or commit suicide. While jumping from the cliff Sethu accidentally gets trapped in a tree and escapes but Ranjani dies. Despite the attempts made by Ranjani's father to jail Sethu by framing a fault case that Sethu killed Ranjani, no strong evidence was there to prove it. He is jailed for the offence of attempted suicide for one year.

Selvaraj (R. Sarathkumar), an upright police officer, takes charge as a SP in a new area and he settles down there with his daughter Meena. A woman inspector Amudha (Meenakshi) helps him. Selvaraj challenges a notorious man Gurusami (Mylai R.V. Gurupadam) and his henchmen Kaali (Mansoor Ali Khan), Dharma (K. Natraj) and Soori (Justin) to punish them. Amudha is intrigued by Selvaraj and he tells her his tragic past.
