Aashiq (English: The Lover) is a 2001 Bollywood movie directed by Indra Kumar. The film stars Bobby Deol and Karisma Kapoor in the lead. This is a remake of Telugu movie Gulabi (film).

The film premiered on 26 January 2001 in Mumbai, Aashiq was declared 'Below Average' at the Indian box-office.

Synopsis

Chander (Bobby) helps his friend marry his lover (Sapna) against Sapna's brother's wishes. Sapna's friend Pooja (Karhisma Kapoor) is with Sapna when Chander helps Sapna run away from home. From that moment Pooja falls madly in love with Chander. Sapna and Chander's friend get married. This enrages Sapna's brother who harbors a grudge against Chander & hence creates trouble for him.

Sapna (Karisma Kapoor) has been brought up by her three doting, but eccentric uncles. Uncle no. 1 (Paresh Rawal) is a Hindu religious fanatic, while Uncle. No. 2 (Om Puri) is a former wrestler who is very in to fitness, and makes Sapna do intense workout routines daily. Uncle no. 3 (Anupam Kher) is in to fashion and western music. However, Mary works for another family, and tells them of Sapna's plight. She shares Sapna's photo with Raja (Salman Khan). He is pleased with her photo and is determined to make her his bride. Meanwhile, Sapna looks to a last resort and tries to run away, but Uncle no. 3 catches her and volunteers to take her to the airport himself. On her travels through Europe, Raja creates nothing but trouble for her, but circumstances separate them from the rest of the tour group, and Raja saves Sapna's life. They fall in love, and wish to marry once they return to India, but Raja must first impress all three of her uncles. Through a series of comic events, Raja wins their hearts. He and Sapna happily marry in the end.

Shekhar tries to bring peace between the warring gangs, but is attacked by the rival gang & killed on way to a re-conciliatory meeting that he wanted to attend on his father's behalf. Nandini feels insecure and decides to leave India with her son but Narasimha imprisons them. Desperate to escape, she goes on a difficult journey to return to Canada with the help of Shekhar's mother and sister. Wanted by Narasimha, Nandini seeks help from drifter Jai Singh (Shahrukh Khan) who after hesitation, helps her and her son board a train to Jaipur. In order to protect Nandini and her son, Jai fights with the goon and dies after killing the goons. Meanwhile, Shekhar's mother begs his father to let Nandini and her son go. However, Narasimha goes but at the airport, he gets emotional and after kissing his grandson, allows them to go. The films ends with Nandini along with her son boarding a plane to Canada.
