Virendra "Viren" Pratap Singh (Anil Kapoor) travels to Rajasthan with his governess, affectionately called Dai Jaa (Waheeda Rehman). He meets the beautiful Pallavi (Sridevi) and falls in love with her. However, she is older than he is, though this does not bother Viren. During a property dispute and a court case, Pallavi's father dies of a heart attack. She is shattered and goes into isolation. At the wake, Viren goes to console her, when she runs past him—towards Siddhharth, the man she loves. Viren is heartbroken but, to fulfill Pallavi's father's dying wish, he arranges the wedding between Siddhharth and Pallavi. Allowing Pallavi to live her life happily, Viren leaves for London.

Roshni (Sridevi) is the only child of Sharda Chhadha (Reema Lagoo). Her father, Prakash Chhadha (Anupam Kher), left before she was born and she has no knowledge of where he went. Roshni is introduced to Rahul Malhotra (Rahul Roy) and they share a mutual attraction. When he learns that she is an aspiring singer, he assists in her career so she becomes popular. She has a devoted fan named Jaggannath alias Jaggu (Sanjay Dutt), who is a petty thief. He is in love with her but she rejects him. During a trip she and Rahul had taken to Hong Kong, she is arrested for trafficking cocaine and Rahul disappears. Jaggu brings an attorney, but she is quickly found guilty and sentenced to death. Jaggu visits the prison and runs afoul of two guards, themselves lovers, who beat him in front of Roshni. The attorney works to help them escape. A fight ensues between Roshni and the female guard in which the latter is killed. The warden intervenes and is killed by Jaggu. They escape and return to India. At the airport Prakash is questioned by the police and Roshni learns that he is her father, and that he had fled the country years earlier when he has been wrongfully accused of treason. Later at Rahul's house, Rahul admits that he had been dealing with drugs that resulted in Roshni's arrest. She slaps him for deceiving her and ends their relationship. With Prakash's blessings, Roshni and Jaggu get married.

Jagmohan Lal aka Jugran is a crime lord who wants to climb up the crime ladder. Once, when Customs Officer Verma tries to nab him, he escapes. To save his skin, Jugran kills his twin brother Manmohan Lal and takes the identity of latter. The world is led to believe that Jugran is still on the run. Meanwhile, Jugran kills Verma and a Dr. Ashok, destroying both the families in process. David D'Costa (Amitabh Bachchan) lives a relatively poor life in Chennai with his wife Mary D'Costa (Jayaprada) who is pregnant. He literally worships the Member of Parliament Chaturvedi (Sadashiv Amrapurkar), and is even willing to die for him. He introduces Mary to Chaturvedi, and with his blessings they name the new-born son James. Then one day while he is busy obstructing rail traffic, he gets arrested and is bailed out by Mahesh (Anupam Kher) When he returns home he finds that Mary has committed suicide. She left a note blaming Chaturvedi for raping her. An upset David goes to confront Chaturvedi, is intercepted by Police Inspector Roop Kumar Sahay (Dalip Tahil) and Dr. Verma (Bharat Kapoor), the evidence is destroyed, and he is sentenced to 24 years in prison for Mary's murder. He asks his friend Mahesh to look after James in his long absence. Twenty four years later, David is released, he goes to visit Mahesh and is shocked to find that Mahesh has changed, he is no longer a boot-legger, he now lives a wealthy life-style, he wants David to forget the past, and live with his CID Inspector son Vijay (also Amitabh Bachchan). David is devastated with this news, but is determined to avenge his wrongful conviction and Mary's death, so he sets about to kill his tormentors one by one - the only obstruction he faces is none other than Vijay who, unaware of David being his father, is out to protect the 3 people.

Anju and Manju are twins separated when babies thanks to their mentally handicapped nanny. An evil uncle Tribhuvan gets their parents killed in a car accident. Anand Verma, a widower and father of a child, admits a woman in the hospital who had lost her memory. Since he admitted her in the hospital, the doctor asks him to take care of her until she recovers from amnesia. The doctor names her Asha which is the name of Anand's wife and makes her believe that she is married to Anand and has a child. Due to the circumstances, Anand has to accept the situation and takes her to his house. Asha insists that she does not remember any incident about her life with Anand. To make her believe doctor lies to her that she has a birthmark in the part of the body only known to her husband. He also places a photograph of hers with the wedding photo of Anand. Following the events in Nagina, Nigahen is the story of Neelam, the daughter of Rajiv and Rajni. After the tragic car accident of her parents, Neelam is raised by her grandfather in the city and is finally brought back to her ancestral home in the country, as a young adult (who bears a striking resemblance to her mother, also played by Sridevi). There, she encounters and falls in love with Anand who as a child was kidnapped by Gorakh Nath, a powerful Tantrik. Claiming to have amnesia of the events, Anand woos Neelam and she falls in love with him. Little does Neelam know that Anand does not have amnesia and is working for Gorakh Nath: the Tantrik has set his eyes on a powerful gem (Mani), which grants the one who possesses it great powers. The only person who knows its whereabouts is Neelam, who unbeknown to her, was hypnotized by her late mother's Guardian Snakes into going to the old temple from the original story, and locating the gem (an event witnessed by Gorakh Nath).
