Police inspector Pierre Lau (Sammo Hung) and his young superior Tang Chuen Shek (Takeshi Kaneshiro) are ordered to cooperate with customs officer Rambo Wong (Yuen Biao) to foil a drug trade. Une série d’attentats à la bombe se produit à Hong Kong, suscitant la peur parmi la population. L'ancien agent de déminage Poon Sing-fung (Andy Lau), tombé dans le coma à la suite d'une explosion, devient le principal suspect en raison de ses liens avec l'organisation criminelle Resurrection. Après son réveil, Poon est interrogé et emprisonné. Il s'évade pour découvrir la vérité et prouver son innocence. Sur sa route de fugitif, il demande l'aide à son ancien camarade d'armes, également démineur, Tung Cheuk-man (Lau Ching-wan). Cependant, les deux se querellent car Tung doit choisir entre la justice et l'amitié. Il décide de choisir cette-dernière et aide son ami. Au même moment, l'ex-petite amie de Poon, Pong Ling (Ni Ni), qui est maintenant inspectrice en chef de l'Unité de lutte contre le terrorisme, cherche désespérément à découvrir le coupable de la série d'explosions et persuade Poon d'entrer en contact avec le groupe Resurrection pour découvrir sa prochaine cible et prouver son innocence. Poon réalise qu'il est tout aussi difficile de dévoiler la vérité que de se débarrasser d'explosifs.

The film opens with T.P (Tony Fish), one of the senior counselors at a camp, is telling a scary story around a campfire to the young campers and the other counselors - who consist of Betsy (Gaylen Ross), Ellie (Jan Claire), Dave (Seth Jones), Stacy (Harriet Bass), Bill (Alexander Murphy Jr.), and Max (Carl Fredericks); the late middle-aged head counselor. After T.P. finishes his story, Max begins to tell of a man named Madman Marz, who killed his whole family with an axe was convicted by being hung for his crimes, only to break free and disappear into the woods. Max continues by saying that anyone who says his name will awaken him and cause him to track and kill that person. Richie (Jimmy Steele), a cocky teenager, stands up and screams Marz's name, smashing a rock into his old house. Max, annoyed at Richie, ends the campfire and sends everyone to their cabins, while he goes into town to retrieve supplies. Richie notices Madman Marz up in a tree, and follows him to his house, where he investigates. As Max and Dave try to retrieve a felling axe that is stuck into a log, everyone heads inside their cabins. Chef Dippy (Michael Sulliva) is killed by Marz outside.

While walking home from work, Thana, a mute seamstress in New York City's Garment District, is raped at gunpoint in an alley by a mysterious, masked attacker. She survives and makes her way back to her apartment, where she encounters a burglar and is raped a second time. Thana, her name an allusion to Greek god of death Thanatos, hits this second assailant with a small sculpture then bludgeons him to death with an iron, and carries his body to the bathtub. She goes to work the next day, and after encountering working with an iron, watching her boss Albert rip a shirt off a mannequin, she goes into shock, which worries her co-workers. However, when she looks at the trashbin at her office, she decides to dismember the burglar's corpse and throw the parts away in various locations of the city.
