The premise, conceived by Steven Nalevansky, involved a creature lurking beneath the sand of Santa Monica Beach that attacks locals and vacationers. The film's tagline was: "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water... you can't get to it!". Although the film quality was grainy, and copies are scarce, the film has become a cult classic.
Synopsis
In the opening scene, a person goes missing on Los Angeles, California's Venice Beach; a middle-aged woman named Ruth who is walking her dog is suddenly pulled under the sand of the deserted beach by an unseen force. The woman's screams for help are heard by Harry Caulder, a harbor patrol officer who is taking a swim in the ocean just offshore. Harry calls the police to Ruth's disappearance but the two LAPD detectives, Royko and Piantadosi, claim that without a body there is not much they can do. The next day, Ruth's estranged daughter, Catherine, arrives from San Francisco after Harry calls her to her mother's disappearance.Actors

After the sudden death of their father, four children — teenagers Chris and Cathy and 5-year-old twins Cory and Carrie — find themselves penniless and forced to travel with their mother Corinne to live with her wealthy parents (whom the children had neither met nor been told about before). Corinne informs her children that there has been tension between herself and her parents for many years, but does not elaborate and simply says they had cut her out of their lives for something she had done of which they disapproved. The children trust her, though Cathy is skeptical as she wonders what happened that caused the rift between her mother and her parents.

The farmers of the peaceful planet Akir are threatened by the space tyrant Sador (John Saxon) and his army of mutants, the Malmori. Sador's huge ship carries a weapon called a "Stellar Converter", which turns planets into small stars. He threatens to use the Converter unless the planet submits to him when he returns in several days. Zed (Jeff Corey), the last Akira warrior, is old and nearly blind. He suggests they hire mercenaries to protect the planet. Lacking valuable resources, they can only offer food and shelter in payment. Unable to go himself, Zed offers his ship, which has an artificial intelligence navigation and tactical computer named Nell, for the job if they can find a pilot. The ship is fast and well-armed but cannot defeat Sador alone. Shad (Richard Thomas), a young man who has piloted the ship and is well known to Nell, volunteers for the recruiting mission.

The year is 1990 and space travel is well-established since humans landed on the moon twenty years earlier.
