The film marked Nazzari's first role as a lead actor, after making his film debut the previous year. It was a box office success and established some of his personal traits that would be brought out even more clearly in his breakthrough role Luciano Serra, Pilot (1938).
Synopsis
Umberto Solaro, a young cavalry officer, falls in love with a Piedmont Count's daughter. They develop a romantic attachment, but she marries an Austrian baron under family pressure. After his horse dies in an accident during a completion, Solaro transfers into the newly formed Italian Air Force. He falls heroically in combat during the First World War.Actors

Luciano Serra, valeureux aviateur lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, se retrouve désormais sans but. Il gagne quelque argent en assurant, à l'aide d'un modeste hydravion, le baptême de l'air de touristes en mal de sensations. En 1921, il s'embarque alors pour l'Amérique du Sud, espérant y faire fortune. Là-bas, des financiers lui proposent d'organiser un raid aérien au-dessus de l'Océan Atlantique de Rio de Janeiro à Rome. Trahi par des commanditaires sans scrupules, Luciano n'abandonne pas l'entreprise mais, il disparaît, à bord de son engin, en 1931. Très attaché à l'histoire de son père, Aldo Serra, entre à l'Académie aéronautique de Caserte et participe dès 1935 à la conquête coloniale en Éthiopie. Luciano Serra est, quant à lui, toujours vivant et se retrouve également en Abyssinie. Lors d'une opération dramatique, il sauve son fils, au mépris du danger, mais doit y laisser sa vie.

In Paris, bloodthirsty jewel thief Roger Sartet (Alain Delon) escapes from custody with the help of the Manalese, a small-time but well-organised Sicilian Mafia clan led by patriarch Vittorio (Jean Gabin) and which includes his sons Aldo (Yves Lefebvre) and Sergio (Marc Porel) and son-in-law Luigi (Philippe Baronnet). While in prison, Sartet got to know an electrician (Christian de Tillière) who was involved in the setting up of an extensive security system at a diamond exhibition in Rome — the electrician returned home early, unannounced, caught his wife in bed with a lover and shot them. Unaccustomed to prison life, he made friends with Sartet and bit-by-bit supplied him with details of the exhibition.

The film is set in 1941 during the Second World War, when the city of Benghazi in Italian-ruled Libya was occupied by British forces. A contingent of Italian prisoners of war arrive on a train from Germany after World War II to Turin. The city where Ernesto (played by Nazzari) lives has been bombed, his mother is dead and his sister has gone missing. State help for returning veterans is scant and bureaucracy rampant. Ernesto tries to get an honest job, but fails. After finding a lost purse and meeting the dangerously seductive Lidia (played by Anna Magnani), Ernesto discovers the whereabouts of his lost sister (played by Carla del Poggio), who has turned to prostitution to survive during the war years.
