City of Anatol (German:Stadt Anatol) is a 1936 German drama film directed by Viktor Tourjansky and starring Gustav Fröhlich, Brigitte Horney and Fritz Kampers. It is based on a 1932 novel City of Anatol by Bernhard Kellermann. The film is set in a small city in the Balkans, where the discovery of oil leads to a major boom. A separate French language version Wells in Flames (Puits en flames) was made, also directed by Tourjansky but featuring a different cast.

Synopsis

Il y a beaucoup d'agitation à Anatol, petite ville isolée dans la Turquie, lorsque l'aventurier Jacques Gregor atterrit avec un avion au milieu d'une prairie. Pour Jacques, c'est un retour aux sources, il est déjà venu ici alors qu'il voyageait comme un vagabond. Il explique à Franziska, qu'il a connue autrefois, qu'il a de grands projets pour ce bled au milieu de nulle part. Il veut extraire du pétrole ici et provoquer un véritable boom économique qui apportera une grande prospérité pour tous.

Non loin de la frontière russo-chinoise, à Harbin. Depuis quelques jours, la ville de Mandchourie s'agite. Trois d'entre eux décident de s'enfuir dans l'après-midi du 6 août 1928. Laudy, un ingénieur allemand, découvre avec un compagnon sur les murs un avis de recherche l'accusant d'espionnage industriel. Les Russes proposent 5 000 roubles contre son arrestation. Un commissaire soviétique se déplace dans la ville avec son groupe armé de mitrailleuses entre les gens en fuite avec leurs biens dans la chaleur étouffante. Les soldats britanniques déployés dans le quartier diplomatique de Harbin affichent un mépris sous couvert de neutralité.

During the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin the young Inge Wagner and Luftwaffe Fliegerleutnant (Flight Lieutenant) Herbert Koch meet, and within a few days fall in love. They make plans for their joint future, but before they can get married Herbert is seconded to the Condor Legion and ordered to the Spanish Civil War; he is forced to leave immediately without giving Inge any explanation. The mission is top secret and all contact with home is forbidden, including by letter, and he is unable to contact her with an explanation. When after several months the operation is over, and Herbert is recovering from a severe injury, he is at last able to write to Inge, but she has moved in the meantime and he is unable to trace her.
