Flüchtlinge (Refugees) is a 1933 German film depicting Volga German refugees persecuted by the Bolsheviks on the Sino-Russian border in Manchuria in 1928.

The film was directed by Gustav Ucicky and starred Hans Albers, Käthe von Nagy and Eugen Klöpfer. The screenplay was written by Gerhard Menzel and was based on his own novel of the same title.

It was the first movie to win the state prize, and Goebbels praised it as among those films that, while they did not explicitly cite National Socialist principles, nevertheless embodied its spirit, a new film reflecting the ideal of their national revolution.

The refugees are rescued by a heroic German leader much like the Führer; the symbolism is obviously intended to emulate Adolf Hitler although its hero, being blond and athletic, represented the physical ideal much more clearly. He is disgusted by "November Germany", and devotes himself to the ideal of "true Germany". He off-handedly disposes of some refugees as worthless, and demands complete obedience from all others. The death of a boy deeply devoted to him moves him, as dying for a cause is something he would wish for himself, in keeping with Nazi glorification of heroic death.

Their Communist persecutors are portrayed simply as brutal murderers, typical of works prior to the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact (and again after its breach). The film was shown for some time after the pact, owing to bureaucratic oversight, complicating the efforts of Nazi propaganda.

Synopsis

Non loin de la frontière russo-chinoise, à Harbin. Depuis quelques jours, la ville de Mandchourie s'agite. Les puissances étrangères ont déployé des soldats ; les Chinois rencontrent l'Armée rouge, les Britanniques et les Japonais. On trouve aussi d'autres étrangers occidentaux. Trois d'entre eux décident de s'enfuir dans l'après-midi du 6 août 1928. Laudy, un ingénieur allemand, découvre avec un compagnon sur les murs un avis de recherche l'accusant d'espionnage industriel. Les Russes proposent 5 000 roubles contre son arrestation. Un commissaire soviétique se déplace dans la ville avec son groupe armé de mitrailleuses entre les gens en fuite avec leurs biens dans la chaleur étouffante. Les soldats britanniques déployés dans le quartier diplomatique de Harbin affichent un mépris sous couvert de neutralité.

During the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin the young Inge Wagner and Luftwaffe Fliegerleutnant (Flight Lieutenant) Herbert Koch meet, and within a few days fall in love. They make plans for their joint future, but before they can get married Herbert is seconded to the Condor Legion and ordered to the Spanish Civil War; he is forced to leave immediately without giving Inge any explanation. The mission is top secret and all contact with home is forbidden, including by letter, and he is unable to contact her with an explanation. When after several months the operation is over, and Herbert is recovering from a severe injury, he is at last able to write to Inge, but she has moved in the meantime and he is unable to trace her.

In the Wołyń Voivodeship in eastern Poland, the German minority is oppressed by the Polish majority. The physician Dr. Thomas does not have any hospital available and his daughter Marie, who teaches at a German school, and needs an important operation, watches when her school is disseized by Polish authorities and demolished by an angry mob. Dr. Thomas protests to the mayor, noting the constitutionally guaranteed minority rights; however his protest falls on deaf ears. Marie and her fiancé, Dr. Fritz Mutius, drive to the provincial capital, in order to put their protest to the Voivode (governor), but they are not even received there either. Deciding to stay in the capital in order to call on the court the next day, that evening they go to the cinema. They are accompanied there by her friend Karl Michalek, who has been pressed into service by the Polish Armed Forces. When they refuse to sing the Polish national anthem Mazurek Dąbrowskiego with the rest of the audience, Fritz gets grievously hurt by the furious Polish crowd. Marie tries to take her betrothed to a hospital, but he is refused admission and succumbs to his injuries.
