North and John Twist, and based on the novel High Sierra by W.R. Burnett, the film is about an outlaw who is sprung from jail to help pull one last railroad job.
This version is a remake of the 1941 crime film High Sierra starring Humphrey Bogart, also directed by Walsh. The story was remade for a third time in 1955 as I Died a Thousand Times with Jack Palance and Shelley Winters.
Synopsis
Notorious outlaw Wes McQueen (Joel McCrea) is freed from jail and heads off to the Colorado Territory to meet the man who arranged the escape, his old friend Dave Rickard (Basil Ruysdael). Along the way, the stagecoach he is riding in is attacked by a gang of robbers. When the driver and guard are both killed, McQueen kills or drives off the remaining gunmen, earning the gratitude of the other passengers, dreamer Fred Winslow (Henry Hull) and his daughter Julie Ann (Dorothy Malone). Winslow has bought a ranch sight unseen and looks forward to making his fortune.Actors

Arthur "Cody" Jarrett (James Cagney) is a ruthless, deranged criminal gang leader. At an American air base in England in 1943, conniving, womanizing Sergeant Dolan (Tom D'Andrea) manipulates everyone, while insubordinate ace fighter pilot Major Ed Hardin (Edmund O'Brien) gives his commanding officer and close friend, Colonel Brickley (John Rodney), headaches by ignoring the out-of-date rules of engagement formulated by Brigadier General M. Quelques années après la guerre de Sécession, en Arizona, Jennifer Ballard voyage de la Géorgie à la Californie à bord d'une diligence dans le but de retrouver son fiancé Ben Warren. La voiture est escortée par des soldats car elle transporte aussi la solde. Ils s'arrêtent pour la nuit dans une petite ville, l'escorte se rendant au fort voisin pour être remplacée. Ben, impatient de retrouver sa fiancée, est déjà là. Slayton, attiré par Jennifer, est ennuyé par l'arrivée de Ben, mais les invite néanmoins à dîner. Lorsque la conversation vient à porter sur la guerre, Ben, lui aussi un ancien Confédéré, déclare préférer désormais les compromis et la paix. Le lendemain matin, la diligence repart, mais les soldats qui l'escortent sont en fait des hommes de Slayton. En plein milieu du désert, ils arrêtent la voiture et tuent le conducteur. Slayton dévoile alors sa véritable identité et, lorsque Ben tente de s'interposer, lui tire dessus, le laissant pour mort. Les hors-la-loi partent alors avec l'argent et emmènent Jennifer avec eux. Plus tard, après que Jess a mis en doute la nécessité d'emmener Jennifer, Slayton le fait ligoter et le laisse en plein soleil avant de partir. Pendant ce temps, Ben a repris ses esprits et, après avoir retrouvé un des chevaux de l'attelage, suit la piste des bandits jusqu'à leur cachette, où il trouve Jess, inconscient. Il le ranime et apprend que le gang est en route pour leur cachette au Mexique. Ils partent à leur poursuite, bientôt rejoints par Johash, un Indien dont la sœur est morte à cause de Slayton.

During the American Civil War, soldier Mike McComb is cashiered from the army when he disobeys orders in order to prevent the Confederates from stealing the one million dollars he is guarding by burning the money. Set in New Mexico around the turn of the 20th Century and told in flashback, the film tells the story of Jeb (Mitchum), whose entire family was slaughtered when he was a child. In the aftermath of the massacre, Jeb is found by Mrs. Callum, a widow, who will raise him in her family. Traumatized by the killings, Jeb doesn't recall anything of that night, except for vague images that he sees in a frequent nightmare. Mrs. Callum raises him as her own son, together with her daughter Thorley and her son Adam. Years later, Jeb is shot at while riding a colt, but the shooter misses him; although Mrs. Callum blames the incident on deer hunters, she knows that it was an attempted murder by her brother-in-law Grant, who, for vague reasons, is determined to kill Jeb.
