Synopsis
Quelques années après la guerre de Sécession, en Arizona, Jennifer Ballard voyage de la Géorgie à la Californie à bord d'une diligence dans le but de retrouver son fiancé Ben Warren. Parmi les voyageurs, se trouvent un certain Hamilton, en fait le célèbre hors-la-loi Frank Slayton, un ex-Confédéré, et son complice Jess Burgess. La voiture est escortée par des soldats car elle transporte aussi la solde. Ils s'arrêtent pour la nuit dans une petite ville, l'escorte se rendant au fort voisin pour être remplacée. Ben, impatient de retrouver sa fiancée, est déjà là. Slayton, attiré par Jennifer, est ennuyé par l'arrivée de Ben, mais les invite néanmoins à dîner. Lorsque la conversation vient à porter sur la guerre, Ben, lui aussi un ancien Confédéré, déclare préférer désormais les compromis et la paix. Le lendemain matin, la diligence repart, mais les soldats qui l'escortent sont en fait des hommes de Slayton. En plein milieu du désert, ils arrêtent la voiture et tuent le conducteur. Slayton dévoile alors sa véritable identité et, lorsque Ben tente de s'interposer, lui tire dessus, le laissant pour mort. Les hors-la-loi partent alors avec l'argent et emmènent Jennifer avec eux. Plus tard, après que Jess a mis en doute la nécessité d'emmener Jennifer, Slayton le fait ligoter et le laisse en plein soleil avant de partir. Pendant ce temps, Ben a repris ses esprits et, après avoir retrouvé un des chevaux de l'attelage, suit la piste des bandits jusqu'à leur cachette, où il trouve Jess, inconscient. Il le ranime et apprend que le gang est en route pour leur cachette au Mexique. Ils partent à leur poursuite, bientôt rejoints par Johash, un Indien dont la sœur est morte à cause de Slayton.Actors

The year is 1800, and Britain and France have been at war since 1798, in what later was to be known as the War of the Second Coalition. Gilliatt, a fisherman-turned-smuggler on Guernsey, agrees to transport a beautiful woman, Drouchette, to the French coast. She tells him she hopes to rescue her brother from a French prison. Gilliatt finds himself falling in love and so feels betrayed when he later learns that Drouchette is a countess helping Napoleon plan an invasion of Britain. In reality, however, Drouchette is a British agent working to thwart this invasion. When Gilliatt learns this, he returns to France to rescue her, just as her true purpose has been discovered by the French.

At an American air base in England in 1943, conniving, womanizing Sergeant Dolan (Tom D'Andrea) manipulates everyone, while insubordinate ace fighter pilot Major Ed Hardin (Edmund O'Brien) gives his commanding officer and close friend, Colonel Brickley (John Rodney), headaches by ignoring the out-of-date rules of engagement formulated by Brigadier General M. Gilbert (Shepperd Strudwick). When Major General Mike McCready (Henry Hull) promotes Brickley to whip a new squadron into shape, Brickley recommends Hardin as his replacement. A large caravan of settlers attempt to cross the Oregon Trail. Breck Coleman (John Wayne) is a young trapper who just got back to Missouri from his travels near Santa Fe, seeking to avenge the death of an old trapper friend who was killed the winter before along the Santa Fe Trail for his furs, by Red Flack (Tyrone Power, Sr.) and his minion Lopez (Charles Stevens). At a large trading post owned by a man named Wellmore, Coleman sees Flack and suspects him right away as being one of the killers. Flack likewise suspects Coleman as being somebody who knows too much about the killing. Coleman is asked by a large group of settlers to scout their caravan west, and declines, until he learns that Flack and Lopez were just hired by Wellmore to boss a bull train along the as-yet-unblazed Oregon Trail to a trading post north of Oregon, owned by another Missouri fur trader. Coleman agrees to scout for the train, so he can keep an eye on the villains and kill them as soon as they reach their destination. The caravan of settlers in their Prairie schooners would follow Wellmore's ox-drawn train of Conestoga Wagons, as the first major group of settlers to move west on the Oregon Trail. The action takes place between 1837 and 1845. This is historically accurate, as the first major wave of settlers on the Oregon Trail was in 1843, although the details were completely different.

A narrator tells of the great wars that raged in Montana territory over the grazing of cattle versus sheep. Men on both sides of the battle died, but eventually it was the sheep herders who were driven out. Morgan Lane (Flynn), an Australian sheepman, rides to Montana territory in 1871. He and his men come across a sign declaring that any sheep herders crossing the line into the area will be shot on sight as the surrounding plains are strictly for cattle grazing. The men set up camp for the night just before the boarder. During the night their young unarmed Mexican watchman is shot dead by a local gang of cattle raisers.

Amantha Starr (Yvonne De Carlo) is raised as the privileged white daughter of a Kentucky plantation owner.
